Heart to Heart: What does your joy look like today?

It’s mid-week and most of us are already looking forward to the weekend.

Stop for a minute and take stock of your day. Whether you’re working at a job that you may or may not like, or you’re out in a field looking for employment or some other purpose; stop for a moment and think about your situation. If you look hard enough, chances are that there is something to be upbeat about. Remembering this would help you in making a conscious effort to stay happy. Just as taking time to appreciate the little things that we often take for granted can bring joy to an otherwise mundane day.

Take joy in the little things: the food that you get to eat, the people who love you, the rains and the sunshine because each has its season and reason. Take joy even in some things that may appear bad because they help us to appreciate the good days. In fact, make a decision every day to be joyful.

So, stop what you’re doing right now and ask yourself: what does my joy look like today?


Some tips to add joy to your life right now

1. Don’t wait to be happy

There are always several opportunities to be happy. The chance to be happy is in front of you. All you need to do is shift your focus so you can see it.

Add happiness to your life. Happiness is now, not tomorrow or next week. It is also not in a particular thing. Don’t wait until the next moment to be happy. Create your own happiness and bask in it.

2. Invest in self-care

Being able to take a moment to breathe and hit the reset button is a life skill every one of us should have. Make self-care a part of your routine and make sure it’s guilt-free time.

It would be really hard to invest in self-care when you have a thousand other things to do. So get your work done, then take some time away for self-care. See the time you’re taking away for your happiness as an investment.

3. Stop worrying

Seriously, what does worrying solve? Nothing.

It’s like Bob Marley said: ‘”Don’t worry, be happy. ‘Cos every little thing is gonna be all right…”

To be truly happy, you have to learn to change your patterns, to silence that inner voice that keeps reminding you that there is just one more thing that you need to worry about.

4. Appreciate the small things

There are small things that happen in our lives that we tend to dismiss because we’re waiting for that one big thing that we can finally share with everyone and feel happy about.

But what about being happy about the little things? Celebrate the small wins and watch as your happiness level gets higher and higher. Very soon, they will snowball into large wins, and all without worrying from you.

5. Surround yourself with positive people

Negative people affect your mindset and this brings you down.

People who always criticise you unnecessarily and who only draw attention to your losses aren’t good for your peace of mind.

Your state of mind is determined by your social influencers i.e. the people you talk to and interact with daily. If your social influencers are not doing enough to positively influence your state of happiness, then you need to change them.
