Latest android phones in Nigeria (Tecno, Oppo, Huawei, Infinix, Redmi)

These days, there’s a smartphone for almost every kind of user. In this article, we examine the latest and most affordable high-end smartphones in Nigeria.

Now, more than ever, we are doing so much with our phones. Mobile phones are no longer the gadgets we once used for just basic things like phone calls and texting. Today, we want to do more with our phones—take pictures, send and receive emails, play games, participate in video conferences, and so much more.

Also, the apps being developed are demanding more from our phones. There is therefore the need for phones to be made with specifications that can keep up with these demands.

It is not unusual today to see smartphones with specs that once qualified a laptop or desktop computer as top-notch. This is not a shocking development considering how much people are tending towards their smartphones for most of the traditional things we once did with our computers.

As expected with these upgrades in device capability, an increase in the price of devices has followed. However, there are some devices out there, which can rival the very best in the market for the quality delivered and still not cost bank-breaking amounts.

How we chose our list of most affordable smartphones in Nigeria

This list of the most affordable high-end smartphones was reached by us looking at some qualities. In order, they are processor speed, internal storage size, RAM size, camera and battery. Secondary things like Android OS version, screen size, sensors, design and so on, do not weigh strongly in the choices below. However, these may be the fine details that swing a particular phone in the favour of some users so it is worth reading what we write about them.

“Affordable” as used in this context does not necessarily mean cheap. The prices of the smartphones outlined here would still be out of the reach of the minimum wage earning Nigerians. However, we mean that these phones are relatively affordable compared to the prices on offer by the big players in the smartphone industry.

If what you’re interested in is affordable smartphones below 20,000 click here.

Also, it is important to note that we intentionally did not pick two phones from the same manufacturer. We could easily have made this a list of phones made by any of the above brands but we made sure to diversify the brands as people tend to attach sentimental value to who makes their phones.

Finally, this list is made in no order at all.

With all that said, let’s dive into our overview of the most affordable high-end smartphones in Nigeria.

Our pick affordable high-end smartphones in Nigeria

1. Huawei Y8P

In July 2020, Huawei outranked Samsung and Apple as the leading smartphone mobile brand in the world. This was arguable, a result of COVID-19 causing a drop in Samsung’s global sales in the second quarter of 2020. However, it goes to show just how big a company Huawei has become.

Despite the trade ban in the US that they currently face, the company is still extending its reach to other parts of the world and Nigeria isn’t left out. Many Nigerians have made Huawei their brand of choice when it comes to smartphones because of their affordable prices and great specifications.

The Huawei Y8p smartphone was officially announced on May 18, 2020. It was officially released on June 15 of the same year. It incorporates some of the latest smartphone technologies to make it one of the best available smartphones in the Nigerian market today. Let’s take a detailed look at it.

Design and display

Of the 6.3-inch panel size of the phone, 83.2% is the screen-to-body ratio. The device uses an OLED display for good quality display with less power consumption. The phone’s screen resolution is 1080 * 2400 pixels with a super quality ppi (pixel-per-inch) density of around 418. The phone screen is sure a delight to look at.

Behind the phone, Huawei kept things minimalistic with only the triple-camera setup and flashlight there. The phone is available in Breathing Crystal and Midnight Black colours. The phone is a look-alike of one of Huawei’s older phones—Huawei Enjoy 10S.

Hardware

The chipset that powers the Y8p is the Kirin 710F. There are two variations of the phone available; both variations have 128GB of internal storage with 4GB and 6GB RAM respectively. If you want more room for files, you’ll have to use an NM card (up to 256GB).

The phone’s processing unit is an Octa-core setup. Four of the eight processors are 2.2 GHz Cortex-A73 and the other four are 1.7 GHz Cortex-A53. This means running even heavy apps and games should not be an issue.

The fingerprint sensor of this phone is not at the back as is the case with most phones. Instead, it uses an optical format that is located under the screen.

Network

The Y8p run has a dual Nano-SIM setup, with both SIMs capable of being on standby. One of the SIM slots also acts as the memory card slot, so you would have to choose between running two SIMs on standby or a SIM and Memory Card.

GSM, 3G, HSPA and 4G LTE capabilities are entrenched in the phone. This means that high-speed internet browsing should not be an issue.

The phone comes complete with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, NFC and an FM Radio.

Software

The Huawei Y8p runs on Android OS v10.0 + Huawei’s custom EMUI 10.1. However, as a result of the embargo placed on Huawei’s business activities in the United States, it has no access to the Google Play Store. In its place, you will get the Huawei AppGallery and related services.

Camera

Huawei Y8p’s back camera setup features a 48MP main camera with a SuperSpectrum sensor which filters the light intake of the camera allowing for clearer pictures. There’s a 2MP depth sensor to go along with the 8MP ultra wide-angle camera (with a 120° lens).

The camera also offers Super Night Mode (up to 6-second exposures with AI image processing). This, along with a LED flash allows you to take good pictures, even at night.

In front, there’s a decent 16MP selfie camera living in a notch on the screen.

Battery

The 4,000-mAh non-removable Li-Po battery that comes with this phone is nothing to be too excited about. However, it promises about 24-hours of battery life on moderate use.

For charging, the phone does not have fast charge capability. It uses a 2.0, Type-C 1.0 reversible connector to add power to it.

Huawei Y8P price and availability

Huawei Y8p is still readily available in online and physical stores. The 6GB RAM variant is the one available in Nigeria and it goes for around N98,500.00

5. Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S

Xiaomi’s Redmi Note smartphones are at their ninth generation this year. The phone series has consistently offered high-quality smartphones at relatively lower prices.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S
Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S

Check out Redmi Note 9S on Konga

The Redmi Note 9S is the superior iteration of Redmi Note 9 with marked improvements and differences.

Redmi Note 9S was released in April 2020 after its release was teased one month prior. The phone is a jack of all trades– ticking most boxes users seek in a smartphone. It impresses with glass design, a large screen, a very capable chipset, a good value quad-camera at the back, and a huge battery.

Let’s take a look at what it is capable of.

Design and display

As with all Redmi Note phones, the phone has a big screen. A 6.67 inches IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen means it is the biggest Redmi Note screen ever. 84.5% screen-to-body ratio also means you get enough real estate to see more at once with your device.

The phone has a 1080 * 2040 pixels screen resolution. That, along with a pixel density of around 395 ppi means solid quality viewing is guaranteed with this mobile phone.

Another thing that makes the Note 9S eye-catching is that almost every surface of the phone is made of glass. Corning Gorilla Glass 5 is what the front, as well as the back, is made of, along with a plastic frame. The Corning Gorilla Glass handles scratches and falls well; meaning it’ll take some serious impact or reckless use for the phone’s screen or rear to be dented or defaced. The phone has a water-repellent coating.

The glass surface that makes up the phone body means it is more susceptible to slipping off the hand or surfaces. However, Xiaomi remedied that by including silicone casing in every pack of the phone.

Behind the phone, there’s a camera bump that features a quad-camera setup along with a LED flash. Upfront, the selfie camera fits into a little hole down the middle.

The rear features a gradient design, which is available in the following colours: Aurora Blue, Glacier White and Interstellar Gray.

Hardware

The chipset of this phone is a Qualcomm SM7125 Snapdragon 720Gwith an Octa-core processing unit that features two 2.3 GHz and six1.8 GHz processors.

There are two variations of the phone; one has a 4GB RAM along with a 64GB internal memory. The other has a 6GB RAM and 128GB internal memory. There’s a dedicated microSD slot for memory expansion if you so desire.

There are also a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, accelerometer, gyro, proximity and compass sensors.

Network

A dedicated memory card slot means we have dual nano-SIM slots available for standby on this device.

The phone has 4G LTE capabilities and below.

Also, the Redmi Note 9S features Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, Hotspot, Bluetooth5.0, GPS and an FM Radio. The Infrared port found on the phone means it can be used as a remote control for supported TVs.

Software

The device comes preloaded with Android 10 and Xiaomi’s own MIUI Global v11 on top of it.

Some system settings demand a Mi account that needs to be linked to your phone number. However, in most cases, you can go on without ever registering for a Xiaomi account.

Camera

The main camera uses a 48 MP sensor; there’s an 8MP ultra wide-angle camera, a 5MP macro camera and a 2MP depth sensor to complete the quad setup on the rear. This allows you to take videos of up to 4K quality. There’s also a LED flash for darker scenes.

For selfies, the Redmi Note 9S has a 16MP perched in front.

Battery

To power the device, there’s a 5,020 mAh non-removable battery. The phone also has 18W fast-charge capabilities.

For charging and data transfer, the phone uses a Type-C USB2.0.

Which smartphone should I choose?

Each of the above-reviewed affordable high-end smartphones is a delight for users to have. However, one man’s meat is another man’s poison. Therefore, we just quickly go over the strengths and weaknesses of each phone.

Affordable High End Smartphones in Nigeria

Huawei Y8P

The Huawei Y8P is a phone with advanced display properties. With a high resolution and ppi density colours come to life beautifully on the device. However, at 6.3 inches it has the smallest screen among the bunch.

The phone also does (relatively) poorly in the power department. A 4,000 mAh battery without fast charging capabilities is a turn-off.

The lack of Google services on the device is also something you would have to settle with and that is not cool.

Finally, the shared SIM and Memory Card slot is not something that would delight users who are thinking of expanding their storage space and want to use two SIMs. However, the 128GB is a large enough storage space for most.

Infinix Note 7

At 6.95 inches, the screen size on the Note 7 is something that lovers of bigger-sized phones would appreciate. The screen clarity, however, isn’t great as a result of low resolution and ppi density. The gorilla glass protection the phone offers is a plus to protect against falls and scratches.

While the phone might be using an Octa-core processor like the rest, its cumulative clock speed is the lowest of the bunch. Meaning, it would be slower than the other phones.

A dedicated video camera would possibly make recording quality a bit better. Also, fast charging is a huge plus in the favour of the phone.

The price of the phone is also something to consider as it is relatively cheaper considering what is on offer.

OPPO A92

This phone does well in terms of screen clarity. High resolution and ppi density mean a beautiful viewing experience. The camera is able to record 4K quality videos at 30fps and that is awesome.

Fast charging is an awesome thing to consider if you’re going for this phone.

The 8GB RAM size this phone possesses is jaw-dropping, giving you the power to do more with your smartphone.

A major con of the phone is the price it comes with. It is the most expensive of the bunch – as Oppo phones tend to be. However, if you can afford it, it’s a wonderful phone to buy.

Tecno Pouvoir 4 Pro

If battery size is your priority in choosing a phone then this is clearly going to be your choice. Pouvoir 4 Pro’s massive 6,000 mAh battery can last even the heavy user for more than a day and clearly wins in this category.

The screen size of Pouvoir 4 Pro, at 7 inches, also trumps the others. The display quality though is relatively poor.

If you are also a picture lover, this phone’s camera would be a huge turn off for you.

Its price though is something that would draw users towards the phone as it is the least expensive among the reviewed phones.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S

With a body made almost entirely of Gorilla Glass, Note 9S is the winner in terms of look (the Glacier White variation is a thing of beauty). The screen clarity and ppi density of the phone too means the display is top-notch.

The processor speed on this device is the best of the bunch.

In terms of camera, the cumulative quality of its quad-camera setup is also the best of the reviewed devices. The ability to record 4K videos on this device is a huge plus too.

Conclusion
