Want to avoid depression? Then exercising an hour a week can help!

There is a lot of health benefits that have been attributed to exercising such as reducing the risk of chronic disease like diabetes, cardiovascular or heart diseases, blood pressure amongst others.

Exercise has also touted to be great in helping our memory function, help us maintain a healthy weight, boost our happiness level as well as help us get a good nice sleep. So, what is there not to like?

Women exercisingAdd to the mix a 2017 study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry which found that an hour of exercise a week could prevent depression. The same study also found that 12 % of depression cases could have been prevented by a small amount of regular exercise. In that study, researchers recruited  33,908 Norwegian adults. The participants’ levels of exercise and symptoms of depression and anxiety were monitored over 11 years by an international research team, led by the Australia-based Black Dog Institute.

Researchers were able to show that people who did no exercise were 44% more likely to suffer from depression than those who did an hour or two per week. Even relatively small amounts of exercise, from one hour per week, can deliver significant protection against depression.

Exercise and depression

At the time the study was published, lead author, Associate Professor Samuel Harvey, said: “We’ve known for some time that exercise has a role to play in treating symptoms of depression, but this is the first time we have been able to quantify the preventative potential of physical activity in terms of reducing future levels of depression.

These findings are exciting because they show that even relatively small amounts of exercise, from one hour per week, can deliver significant protection against depression.”

Prof Harvey added: “These results highlight the great potential to integrate exercise into individual mental health plans and broader public health campaigns.

If we can find ways to increase the population’s level of physical activity even by a small amount, then this is likely to bring substantial physical and mental health benefits.”

To be clear, it is the opinion of the present writer that exercising alone is not enough to prevent or cure mental health. But including an exercise regime as part of an orthodox treatment regime might help as the study by the international team of researchers shows. One more reason to get sweating.

Always seek help and talk to someone if you feel you might be at risk. Good mental health everyone.
