Australian Open Finals: Djokovic humbles Medvedev to seal Australian Open title; Naomi Osaka strolls to fourth grand slam title

Novak Djokovic showed the entire tennis universe why he is an unstoppable force on Sunday when he humbled Daniil Medvedev in straight sets to claim his third consecutive Australian Open crown on Rod Laver Arena.

The Serbian was head above shoulders on Sunday against his Russian opponent despite a tightly contested first set, playing an unusually high-octane brand of tennis, and surged to a richly deserved 7-5 6-2 6-2 win in less than two hours for his ninth title in Melbourne.

Medvedev, on the other hand, was left frustrated and was seen taking out his anger on his racquet a number of times, but he was unable to find a groove against the world No.1 who was clearly hellbent on collecting an 18th Grand Slam title.

The win means Djokovic moves within two of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal’s record total of 20 Slam victories.

AusOpen Women’s final: Naomi Osaka beats Jennifer Brady in straight sets

Australian Open Final

Naomi Osaka who wriggled her way from being sent out of the Australian Open a week ago has emerged winner of the 2021 edition, making it her second Australian Open title and fourth Grand Slam success by downing Jennifer Brady.

Osaka was at her devastating best as she overcame Jennifer Brady 6-4 6-3 in Saturday night’s final.

As the contest ended one hour 17 minutes later, Osaka broke into a huge smile before both players exchanged a hug at the net.

“I didn’t play my last Grand Slam with fans so just to have this energy it means a lot,” Osaka said to the fans during the trophy presentation, cradling the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup.

“Thank you so much for coming. I feel like playing a Grand Slam is a super privilege right now and it’s something I won’t take for granted. Thank you for this opportunity.”

The world No.3 made an emphatic statement with the win to solidify her status as the top hard-court player in the world.

Osaka also extended her winning streak to 21 — all on hard courts — a spell that included claiming the US Open last September.

Osaka and Brady met in New York, producing a tremendous, hard-hitting semifinal affair and Osaka got the better of it again at Rod Laver Arena.

She foiled Brady’s attempt at becoming the second straight US women’s winner at Melbourne Park who contested her maiden Grand Slam final — after Sofia Kenin.

Brad said: “I’d like to congratulate Naomi on another Grand Slam title”

“She’s such an inspiration to us all and what she is doing for the game is amazing in getting the sport out there, and I hope young girls at home are watching and are inspired by what she is doing.

“Hopefully I’m on this stage next time with this girl over here,” she added, referring to the winners’ trophy.
