Coco Gauff beats Naomi Osaka to advance to Australian Open Quarter-finals

15-year-old Coco Gauff has shocked the world by defeating Naomi Osaka at the Australian Open.

To clinch the biggest win of her career, Gauff followed a Venus Williams win with a 6-3 6-4 win over Naomi Osaka at the Rod Laver Arena in Australia.

Coming back from a stunning 6-0 6-1 defeat by Osaka last year, Gauff beat her opponent and equalled their match win ration.

After the match, the excited Gauff said: “Two years ago I lost first round in juniors, and now I’m here. This is crazy. I was just telling myself one point at a time and keep fighting because you never know what happens on this court. I’m on Rod Laver Arena, I can’t believe this.”

This defeat makes Gauff the youngest player to beat a top-five ranked opponent since Jennifer Capriati beat Gabriela Sabatini at the 1991 US Open.

Gauff, who beat Venus Williams for the second time in her previous match, may have taken inspiration from China’s Wang Qiang.

Like Gauff, Qiang was beaten 6-0 6-1 by Serena Williams last year, only to rally back this year and knock Williams out of the race for the Australian Open cup.

Tennis lovers are both shocked and excited by the pure resilience that Coco Gauff displays and can’t wait to see what will come of her career. One thing is for sure: if she continues like this, she could become the next Serena Williams.
