January Transfer Deadline Deals: Liverpool brings in two defenders on final day; Other Deadline day transfers

Liverpool completed the signing of defender Ben Davies from Preston in a £1.6m deal on deadline day.

The Premier League holders had agreed on a transfer fee for Davies on Sunday and finalized the deal by sending 19-year-old center-back Sepp van den Berg to Deepdale on loan until the end of the season.

An initial payment of £500,000 was made by Liverpool for Davies but Preston could receive add-ons totaling up to £1.1m, while the Championship club will also retain a 20 percent sell-on clause on the defender.

Davies told Liverpoolfc.com that: “It’s a huge opportunity. Obviously it came as a bit of a surprise when it first came but once you start to get your head around it, the opportunity that is in front of me is incredible. I’d be silly to not make the most of it and learn off the players [at the club].

“I’ve never actually been to Anfield and I haven’t had a look around yet. I had a quick look out and had a look at the pitch and it looks like a carpet, which obviously you’d expect.

“I think it’s probably clear that in a normal transfer window, without any issues, we would not look at Preston if there’s a player for us or something like that,” Jurgen Klopp said.

“But since we saw him and since our situation got clearer and clearer – the problems we had – when we saw him we got really excited about it and thought, ‘Wow.’

“We see the quality and we see the potential as well because he’s 25 and there’s a lot to come for him. I love a lot about his play.

“He’s a really good footballer, looks like a proper leader in this Preston team, good in challenges, looks football smart, can play different positions because he played in a back three and a back four and all these things. That makes him really interesting so I’m really looking forward to working with him.”

Ozan Kabak finalizes loan switch to Liverpool

Ozan Kabak has joined Liverpool from Schalke 04

Schalke defender Ozan Kabak also completed his switch to Liverpool on Deadline Day. The Turkish defender has moved to Anfield after the Reds agreed to an initial loan deal with an option to buy.

The 20-year-old underwent a medical in Germany and is expected to fly into Merseyside soon.

Schalke moved to secure Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi on a six-month deal as a replacement for Kabak.

Liverpool had to make these signings amid the club’s central defensive injury crisis.

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are long-term injury absentees, while Joel Matip sustained an ankle injury in the 3-1 Premier League win at Tottenham last week – a game Fabinho missed with a minor muscle injury.

Shkodran Mustafi leaves Arsenal, Maitland Niles and Willock go out on loan

Arsenal Transfer News

Arsenal’s center-back Shkodran Mustafi completed a permanent move to Schalke and has left the club on deadline day.

Mustafi terminated his deal at the Emirates Stadium and signed a six-month contract at Schalke, with the Gunners due to be paid a small compensation fee.

Since falling out of favor under manager Mikel Arteta this season, the 28-year-old became keen on a move back to Germany after lack of appearances for the Gunners.

“Musti has been a key player for us for a long period of time,” said Gunners boss Mikel Arteta.

“He played a very important part in my first season as manager and I’d like to thank him for his professionalism and for always being ready when called upon. Everybody at Arsenal wishes Musti well at Schalke.”

Mustafi won the World Cup with Germany in 2014 and joined Arsenal in 2016 from Valencia in a £35m deal.

In his four-and-a-half-year stay at the Emirates, he won the FA Cup twice and helped the Gunners reach the Europa League final in 2019.

Ainsley Maitland Niles and Joe Willock leaves on loan

Ainsley Maitland-Niles has joined West Bromwich Albion on loan for the remainder of the season.

West Brom, Leicester, and Southampton all held talks with Arsenal in a bid to land the player on loan before the transfer window closed at 11 pm on Monday.

However, West Brom secured a loan deal until the end of the season for the England international, who underwent a medical on Monday.

The 23-year-old who is hoping to secure regular first-team football to boost his chances of playing at the upcoming Euros was keen on a move to the Hawthorns, where he is more likely to get game time in his preferred position in midfield.

Newcastle were also keen on signing the Arsenal midfielder, although the Magpies have signed Joe Willock on loan and Premier League rules state a club cannot loan two players from the same team.

The player would’ve preferred Leicester City who also wanted him but Arteta revealed that Arsenal didn’t want to strengthen a rival battling for the European places at the top of the Premier League.

Everton sign Bournemouth forward Joshua King on Deadline Day

Everton Transfer News

Everton Football Club completed the signing of Bournemouth forward Joshua King on a permanent deal on deadline day.

The 29-year-old made the switch to Goodison Park for a nominal fee and has signed a six-month contract with his new club.

He arrives just days after the Toffees allowed striker Cenk Tosun to return to his former club Besiktas on loan until the end of the season.

Fulham also agreed to sign King on Deadline Day, but the Norway international turned them down to join Carlo Ancelotti’s side. The London side did bring in a striker though, signing Josh Maja on loan from Bordeaux.

King, who scored 53 goals in 184 appearances for the Cherries and became the club’s record scorer in the Premier League before their five-year top-flight stint came to an end at the end of 2019/20, has failed to find the net in 12 Sky Bet Championship appearances this term.

Southampton nails Takumi Minamino on a six-month loan from Liverpool

Takumi Minamino joins Soton on a 6 months loan

Southampton made the biggest deal on Deadline Day by signing Liverpool winger Takumi Minamino on a loan deal until the end of the season.

Liverpool and officials from Southampton opened negotiations on Monday morning and discussions continued throughout the day, with a deal agreed between the two clubs hours before the 11 pm transfer deadline.

The 26-year old Japanese international also completed a medical on Monday evening and will now join his new Southampton team-mates at their team hotel in Manchester ahead of Tuesday’s game against Manchester United.

The player however was believed a doubt to make his debut at Old Trafford as reports suggesting he was not registered in time, but he will be at Ralph Hasenhuttl’s disposal for their Premier League clash at Newcastle on Saturday.

Minamino follows in the footsteps of Maya Yoshida to become the second Japan international to represent the club.

On his arrival, Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl said: “I am very pleased to welcome Takumi to our squad for the rest of this season.

“He will help provide another good attacking option, and is importantly the right profile of player for us.

“This will give us some additional depth in our squad at an important time, and I am looking forward to beginning work with him on the training pitch.”

His arrival also allowed Shane Long to depart the club for Bournemouth on loan for the remainder of the season.
