Gay and happy: Marc Jacobs proposes to boo

On May 17, 2004, Massachusetts became the first US state and the 6th jurisdiction in the world to legalise same-sex marriage. And by 2014, over 70% of US population resides in areas where same-sex is legal.

Though the legalisation of gay marriage was in place, not everyone has accepted it and instances of discrimination against homosexuals abide.  Furthermore, there has been the emergence of many groups that desire to end the legalisation of gay marriage with some social conservatives calling it unnatural with claims that it encourages unhealthy behaviour.

Over time, however, there is a general trend for acceptance of gay individuals and their union. This is helped in part by the “coming out of the closet” and declaring of their sexuality by celebrities and political figures.

Some famous LBGT celebrity activists are Ellen Degeneres, Elton John, Adam Lambert and Wanda Skyes amongst others. Put on that list fashion icon Mark Jacobs, one of the few gay men who never hid their sexuality.  He grew up without being judged or told which sexual preference he should choose.

Speaking with PEOPLE magazine, the fashion designer says:“I always say I lived my life with my grandmother. She was emotionally stable, and she was very encouraging to me.

“No one ever said no to me about anything, no one ever told me anything was wrong. Never. No one ever said, ‘You can’t be a fashion designer.’

“No one ever said, ‘You’re a boy and you can’t take tap-dancing lessons.’ No one ever said, ‘You’re a boy and you can’t have long hair.’

“No one ever said, ‘You can’t go out at night because you’re 15 and 15-year-olds don’t go to nightclubs.’

“No one said it was wrong to be gay or right to be straight.”

And so like many others in love, the 54-year-old fashion celebrity has proposed to his longtime sweetheart, Charly Char Defrancesco.

He was said to have made the proposal at a restaurant via flash mob.

Dancing to Prince’s Kiss, Jacobs conforms to tradition by getting down on one knee to pop the question to his Defrancesco, who works as a model and candlemaker.

I wanted to take him out for a romantic dinner on his birthday and he was like, ‘No, I want to go to Chipotle,’” Jacobs says.

So I knew I had to propose somewhere where he wouldn’t suspect that I was going to do that. And then I organised a flash mob to be there, but he didn’t know anything about that. So I was successful about that.”

Congrats to the happy couple
