Kano State Assembly signs into law castration as punishment for rape

The Kano State Assembly has unanimously signed castration into law as the punishment for rape

This is part of efforts to further amend the state’s penal code law of 2014 which recommends a prison sentence of 14 years for anyone convicted of rape.

Nuraddeen Alhassan, a member of the assembly sought a review of the punishment for rape as he believed that the current 14-year punishment is not enough.

After he raised the motion, other members of the assembly unanimously agreed with him and changed the punishment to castration.

He said: “Therefore, I am calling on the House to recall the law and amend it, to provide castration punishment for rapists.

“I believe this is the only measure to be taken to end the rampant cases of rape in our society, as it is so worrisome.

“I also want to appeal to the House to look into the security issues, so as to strengthen their efforts in tackling the rape cases in the state.”

Nuraddeen Alhassan listed the ways that parents and the state government can help reduce the occurrence of rape in the state. He also called on the state government to find out how rape cases are being handled in court.

The rate of rape cases has spiked dangerously in Nigeria during the lockdown. The most notable case so far is that of Uwaila Omozuwa, who was raped and killed a few months ago in a church in Benin, Edo State.
