Nelson Mandela’s daughter, Zindzi Mandela passes away aged 59

Zindzi Mandela, the youngest daughter of South Africa’s first black president, Nelson Mandela and activist, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela has died.

Public broadcaster, SABC made the announcement, saying that she died in a hospital in Johannesburg in the early hours of Monday morning.

Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Naledi Pandor said her department is still gathering more information about her death.

“Zindzi will not only be remembered as a daughter of our struggle heroes, Tata Nelson and Mama Winnie Mandela, but as a struggle heroine in her own right. She served South Africa well,” Pandor said in a statement, expressing her condolences to the Mandela family and their loved ones.

Zindzi’s death comes after her father, Nelson Mandela’s death in 2013 and her mother, Winnie’s death in 2018. Zindzi was just 18 months old when her father was jailed. He would spend 27 years in prison before his release in 1990.

Zindzi ventured into politics, following in her father’s footsteps. She rose to international prominence when she read Mandela’s rejection of then-president PW Botha’s offer for conditional release from prison at a public meeting in February 1985.

At the time of her death, she was serving as South Africa’s ambassador to Denmark. She is survived by her children Zoleka, Zondwa, Bambatha and Zwelabo and her husband, Molapo Motlhajwa.
