Madrid Open cancelled over rising Covid-19 cases

The Madrid Open, which was set to start in the Spanish capital, Spain, on the 12th of September 2020 has been called off due to the rise of COVID-19 cases.

The clay-court tournament was cancelled after organisers were advised by the Spanish health ministry not to hold it amid the city’s “deteriorating” coronavirus situation.

The Madrid open is seen as an important preparatory event for tennis players heading into the French Open, which begins on 27 September.

The Internazionali BNL d’Italia which would take place in Rome on September 20 will now be the only reasonable top-level clay-court event leading into the French Open.

As an act of responsibility in view of the current situation caused by COVID-19 and having thoroughly evaluated the circumstances that the pandemic continues to generate, it has been decided that 2020 Mutua Madrid Open will not take place this year,” organisers say in a statement.

A statement released by the ATP and WTA Tours states the decision was taken in accordance with local authorities due to “health and safety concern.”The statement added that they were reassessing the calendar for the rest of the year.

We would like to recognise the efforts of the tournament organisers who have gone to great lengths in exploring all options to run this year’s tournament, despite the many challenges presented by COVID-19.”

Both tours are assessing updates to the 2020 provisional calendars in regards to events following the U.S. Open, and an update will be published in due course,” the statement notes.

Spain was one of the worst-affected countries when the pandemic first hit Europe earlier this year and has seen a rise in cases recently with records of more than 302,000 cases of the deadly virus since the start of the pandemic, and 28,498 deaths, according to the latest figures released on Tuesday.

World No 1 Novak Djokovic is the defending champion at the event which was originally scheduled to be played in May.
