Weekend watchlist: 10 of the best films and TV shows to see this weekend

See Malignant, Queenpins, Lucifer Season finale, Kate, and other new films and TV series coming out this weekend that you must watch.

You know how you get so stressed sometimes, and then some nice memory comes to mind, and you smile briefly? My mission today is to plug you right on to a weekend that holds such quality. So, you’re in the middle of a long day at work next week, a scene from a film you saw over the weekend flashes through your mind, and you get a moment’s respite. This weekend boasts of films like Queenpins, Malignant, Kate and much more. Without further ado, let’s dig into the film and TV lineup.

1. Malignant

Yes! Good ol’ horror and eeriness. “Malignant” is a 2021 American horror film directed by James Wan. It focuses on Alan Gates, a cancer patient with a terminal diagnosis who is resigned to his fate until he discovers that his tumour is actually a mysterious parasite. Granted a second lease on life and incredible, otherworldly powers, Alan must fight against an evil army buried beneath society’s skin, all the while unlocking the secrets of his forgotten past. James Wan himself forms a part of the cast, alongside Annabelle Wallis, Ingrid Bisu, Ross Richie, and Jake Abel. It begins to get malignant in cinemas today, 10 September. Go see it.

2. Queenpins

“Queenpins” is an American comedy film written and directed by Aron Gaudet and Gita Pullapilly. Inspired by a true story, it is an outrageous comedy about a frustrated suburban housewife and her best friend. They hatch an illegal coupon-club scheme that scams millions from corporations and delivers deals to legions of fellow coupon clippers. Hot on their trail is an unlikely duo – a hapless loss-prevention officer and a determined US postal inspector – both looking to end their criminal enterprise. The film stars Jack McBrayer, Kristen Bell, Vince Vaughn, Nick Cassavetes, and Aron Gaudet, to mention a few. “Queenpins” begins its cinema reign this Friday. Go have a good laugh!

3. Lucifer (Final season)

This one here is binge-worthy material. If you have already been following the series, you’ll only need to watch the final season as it drops today on Netflix. If you are a first-timer, then here’s a new binge-watching project.

The story goes this way; after millennia of being forced to rule Hell and then blamed for centuries for humanity’s sins, Lucifer Morningstar decided to move to Los Angeles on Earth in 2011 for a better life. There, his life made a turn for the better, finding justice for the innocent and falling in love with Chloe Decker. At the end of the last season (season 5), Lucifer succeeded his father as the next God. Quite the promotion, wouldn’t you say? But, does he really want the job? Find out in this final season. Plus, Chloe prepares to give up detective work, Amenadiel joins the LAPD, and more events simultaneously take place.

4. The Voyeurs

“The Voyeurs” is an American erotic thriller film written and directed by Michael Mohan. After moving into a beautiful loft apartment in Downtown Montreal, a young couple finds themselves becoming increasingly interested in the sex life of their eccentric neighbours across the street. What starts out as an innocent curiosity slowly turns into an unhealthy obsession after discovering that one of these neighbours is cheating on the other. Temptation and desire cause their lives to become tangled in unexpected ways, leading to deadly consequences. Umh Umh Umh! This one will be raunchy. Nothing sweeter than watching some erotica with your lover, and here’s your chance. “The Voyeurs” allows you a peep today, 10 September, on Prime Video.

5. Catch The Bullet

This powerful western shows what happens when you push a good man too far. Britt MacMasters, a US Marshal, returns from a mission to find his father wounded and his son, Chad, kidnapped by the outlaw Jed Blake. Hot on their trail, Britt forms a posse with a gunslinging deputy and a stoic Pawnee tracker. But both Jed and Britt tread dangerously close to the Red Desert’s Sioux territory, which poses a menace far greater than either can imagine. I want to think this sent shivers down your spine, too, as it did mine. The film also carries sentimental value as it is dedicated to the late Jay Pickett, who played the role of Britt. “Catch The Bullet” shoots into select cinemas and VOD platforms today, 10 September.

6. The Card Counter

“The Card Counter” is a 2021 American crime drama film written and directed by Paul Schrader. It follows William Tell, a gambler and former serviceman who just wants to play cards. However, his spartan existence on the casino trail is shattered when he is approached by Cirk, a vulnerable and angry young man seeking help to execute his plan for revenge on a military colonel. Tell sees a chance at redemption through his relationship with Cirk. Gaining backing from mysterious gambling financier La Linda, Tell takes Cirk with him on the road, going from casino to casino until the unlikely trio set their sights on winning the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. This one has a star cast of Paul Schrader, Oscar Isaac, Willem Dafoe, Tye Sheridan, and Tiffany Haddish. The film makes its theatrical debut today.

7. Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.

“Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.” is an American family medical comedy-drama developed by Kourtney Kang, and it is based on the 1989–93 ABC television series “Doogie Howser, M.D”. The series follows Lahela “Doogie” Kamealoha, a teenaged wunderkind juggling her high school life with an early medical career. It premiered on 8 September 2021 on Disney+. This one is just the type of content the family can enjoy together as they relax this weekend. Check it out if you have a Disney+ subscription.

“Small Engine Repair” is a 2021 film adaptation of a play of the same name written by playwright-actor John Pollono. Frank, Swaino and Packie are lifelong friends who share a love of the Red Sox, rowdy bars and Frank’s teenaged daughter Crystal. But when Frank invites his pals to a whiskey-fueled evening and asks them to do a favour on behalf of the brash young woman they all adore, events spin wildly out of control. The film is a pitch-black comedic drama with a wicked twist and a powerful exploration of brotherhood, class struggle and toxic masculinity. It makes its cinema outing today, 10 September.

9. The Manson Brothers Midnight Zombie Massacre

Wrestling’s most hated tag team, The MANSON BROTHERS, now in the twilight of their careers and relegated to doing smaller wrestling promotions, take a MIDNIGHT cage match on Halloween night, only to find themselves trapped in the arena with wrestlers and fans infected with a mutated rabies ZOMBIE virus. Armed only with their wrestling skills and enchanted Lucha libre masks, they must fight for their lives and ensure the virus is contained to prevent an all-out MASSACRE and pandemic. The film stars Max Martini, Randy Couture, Bas Rutten, DB Sweeney, and Adrian Pasdar. It debuts in theatres today.

10. Kate

Kate is an upcoming American action thriller film directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan and written by Umair Aleem. After she’s poisoned, a ruthless criminal operative has less than 24 hours to exact revenge on her enemies and, in the process, forms an unexpected bond with the daughter of one of her past victims.
