Bayer Leverkusen secured a 2-1 win over fellow challengers Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night despite a very wasteful showing to move within four points of Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich.
After weathering an initial bout of pressure from BVB, Moussa Diaby put Leverkusen in front in the 14th minute after slotting past Roman Burki in a one-on-one situation following a long pass from Leon Bailey.
Although Julian Brandt cancelled out the Moussa Diaby opener, Dortmund had no answer to Florian Wirtz’s 80th-minute shot.
Dortmund looked to punish Leverkusen for all their missed chances in front of goal but could not get an all-important second goal to see out the game allowing Leverkusen to double back.
The win places Leverkusen above RB Leipzig on goal difference while Julian Nagelsmann’s side will hope to change that when they host Union Berlin on Wednesday.
Dortmund are now level on points with fifth-placed Wolfsburg, who moved up with a 2-0 win away to Mainz.
Borussia Monchengladbach also moved into seventh with a 1-0 win over Werder Bremen, while Hoffenheim moved clear of immediate trouble with a 3-0 win at Hertha Berlin.
