Carabao Cup third round: Kai Havertz scores hat-trick as Chelsea puts 6 past Barnsley

Chelsea’s record signing who was bought in the summer transfer window, Kai Havertz, showed why he cost them so much as he bagged a hat-trick in Chelsea’s 6-0 romping of Barnsley to send the Blues into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

England International Tammy Abraham opened the scoring and Havertz doubled their lead before the break.

Ross Barkley then fired in Chelsea’s third early in the second half at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night of 23 September 2020, before Havertz added two more to complete his hat-trick.

Chelsea’s new signings had a swelled night as Thiago Silva impressed on his debut for the club, while Ben Chilwell also enjoyed his first appearance, stepping off the bench to assist a late sixth for fellow substitute Olivier Giroud.

Many would say it’s Barnsley but for Frank Lampard and his boys, it’s an opportunity to play together as a unit and show why they spent so much this summer.

Havertz’s hat-trick was the first of his senior club career and he has now been involved in 26 goals in all competitions in 2020, scoring 18 and making eight assists.

Only Robert Lewandowski (35), Lionel Messi (32), and Cristiano Ronaldo (31) have been involved in more goals among players in the top five European leagues.

Frank Lampard says: “Tonight was a great exercise for him to see how we want to work off the ball, for him to be a part of that”

“He made a great recovery tackle for Ross’ goal, and then to also just have some freedom on the ball and roam in more central areas.

“I thought it was a great combination with Tammy and I was pleased with the way he grew into the game in terms of confidence. It was a great night for Kai, and the first of many for him.”

Chelsea would face either Tottenham or Leyton Orient in the next round.

However, Spurs’ vs Leyton Orient could not go ahead as scheduled on Tuesday after several of the League Two side’s squad tested positive for coronavirus.

Discussions are ongoing over the implications of not holding the third-round match on Tuesday, with a further update to be provided in due course.
