Champions League results: Bayern got off to a flying start against Atletico Madrid; Lukaku saves Inter’s blushes

Kingsley Coman, who scored as Bayern won the Champions League last season, scored twice in their first group stage match against Atletico Madrid at the Allianz Arena.

The young Frenchman also set up another goal as holders Bayern Munich crushed Atletico Madrid 4-0 in their Group A opener to stretch their winning run in the competition to 12 games.

The France international was found with a sublime pass by Joshua Kimmich to put the hosts ahead with a fine effort in the 28th minute, Coman then set up Leon Goretzka for Bayern’s second goal four minutes before the break.

Corentin Tolisso scored the third goal to kill off any hope of a comeback for the Spaniards with a gem of a shot in the 66th minute before Coman turned defender Felipe inside out to bag his second of the evening six minutes later.

Bayern, who won all 11 of their games en route to the Champions League title last season, have started the season again with a statement of intent, but Atletico have now lost three of their last four group stage games. The latest was their joint-heaviest defeat in the competition under Diego Simeone.

The Bayern side could go all the way and win this season’s edition although only time would tell. Real Madrid and AC Milan have been the only side who have retained the European Cup since Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest managed the feat in 1980.

Bayern were already favourites leading into the fixture and they hammered in 16 efforts on goal.

Bayern scored a club record 43 goals in last year’s campaign and have four already in the bag this season.

Inter Milan 2-2 Borussia Monchengladbach: Romelu Lukaku scores twice as Inter avoided defeat at home

Romelu Lukaku’s impressive goalscoring regime for Inter Milan continued as the big Belgian scored twice to rescue Inter Milan in Wednesday’s Champions League group openers.

Champions League review

Lukaku struck a 90th-minute equaliser as the Serie A side snatched a 2-2 draw at home to Borussia Monchengladbach.

The striker put Inter in front with an opportunist goal shortly after the second half resumed but the Bundesliga side levelled with their first shot on target in the 63rd minute courtesy of a penalty converted by Ramy Bensebaini.

Gladbach’s efficiency in front of goal counted for everything as their second shot on target also produced a goal. Jonas Hofmann broke clear of the Inter defence and scored with a strike through Samir Handanovic’s legs in the 84th minute.

But Lukaku rescued Inter Milan in the Group B game as he managed to scramble the ball home, at the far post, with his knee after a corner was headed on by Alessandro Bastoni.
