A national ban on all forms of outdoor grassroots sport in England is on the verge of being suspended at the end of the current lockdown in the country.
Members of Parliament will vote later this week on Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s statement to the House of Commons on Monday, unveiling plans for Covid-19 restrictions scheduled for 2 December.
Leisure centres and gyms across England have been locked, but there is an optimism that the new Covid-19 regulations will allow them to reopen.
Elite sport has continued behind closed doors during the four-week-old lockdown but grassroots and amateur sport has been abandoned since 5 November 2020.
“I’m desperate for it to come back,” the country’s culture secretary Oliver Dowden said. “I am pretty hopeful and confident as we go back into the tier system. It’s top of the list for us to get it back from 2 December. I know how valuable it is. We have to go through a proper process of evaluating the evidence; we have to wait until the final decisions are made.”
The government in Scotland allows only non-contact training in grassroots football under lockdown regulations in areas with the most stringent restrictions.
