Europa League Roundup: Arsenal and Tottenham win big in matchday 4, other results

MOLDE 0-3 ARSENAL

Nico Pepe reacted to Sunday’s red card against Leeds by helping the Gunners to a comfortable win over the Swedish opponents Molde with a brilliant display, to book their passage into the knockout stages of the Europa League with two games to spare.

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, had criticized the Ivorian winger after he got himself sent off on Sunday after a needless challenge on a Leeds player and charged him to do better in the coming matches. Arsenal’s record signing responded with the game’s first goal in an impressive individual display.

Reiss Nelson and Folarin Balogun, in only his second appearance for the club, scored Arsenal’s second and third respectively as they came away from Sweden with all three points.

TOTTENHAM 4-0 LUDOGORETS

Europa League Matchday 4

Brazilian striker, Carlos Vinicius, broke his Spurs duck by netting a brace as Spurs strolled to a comfortable win over Bulgarian Champions, Ludogorets, at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to boost their hopes of clinching a spot in the next round.

Jose Mourinho’s team looked sharped on the night as Vinicius’s brace was soon followed up by a wonder-strike off the boots of Englishman Harry Winks before Lucas Moura bundled in the game’s fourth.

The Premier League leaders, tied on nine points at the top of Group J but second to Antwerp due to an inferior head-to-head record, can seal qualification with a point away to Austrian side LASK next Thursday.

BRAGA 3-3 LEICESTER

Europa League Matchday 4

Brendan Rodgers’ team needed an injury-time equalizer from Jamie Vardy to bring a dramatic tie in Portugal level at 3-3, as the Foxes secured qualification into the knockout stage of the Europa League.

Leicester, without several of their regular starters, did not find it as easy as they did in the reverse fixture where they won 4-0. And it was fair to say that Braga fully deserved their 2-1 lead heading into halftime.

Brendan Rodgers might have hoped to rest his best legs heading into a hectic fixture schedule in England’s domestic league, but at half-time, his hands were forced as he introduced defender Wesley Fofana and midfielder Youri Tielemans, before introducing Vardy and James Maddison in the 62nd minute.

Maddison soon contributed with an assist for teenager Thomas to bring the game level 2-2, with his first professional goal, making him Leicester’s youngest ever goalscorer in European competitions.

The Foxes’ continued to push for a winner but that decision appeared to have backfired when substitute Fransergio scored to put Braga 3-2 up in the 90th minute, but Vardy came to the rescue when he arrived in the penalty area to turn in Albrighton’s cross at the back post shortly after.

Leicester needs one more win to secure the top spot in the group but they can as well afford to field a weak team in the final two games as qualification has pretty much been sealed.

Elsewhere in Prague, Scottish giants, Celtic, have been eliminated after a second successive 4-1 defeat in the hands of Sparta Prague with manager Neil Lennon coming under immense pressure.
