FA Cup Roundup and Semi-final draw: Chelsea to face Manchester City; Southampton drawn against Leicester

Chelsea will face Premier League leaders Manchester City in the last four of the Emirates FA Cup while Leicester City will play Southampton after dumping Manchester United out of the competition.

Man City reached the last four with a 2-0 quarter-final win over Everton, a result which also meant the club had reached the last four of the competition three years running for the first time since 1932.

Late goals from in-form midfielder Ilkay Gundogan and midfield maestro Kevin De Bruyne sent the Citizens into the FA Cup semi-finals over a stubborn Everton at Goodison Park.

Everton sat deep in a goalless first half but came closest to opening the scoring as Yerry Mina’s glancing header was cleared off the line by Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Pep Guardiola and his side are still in the pursuit of an unprecedented quadruple, leading the pack at the top of the Premier League as well reaching the Champions League quarter-finals and already to play in next month’s Carabao Cup final.

Meanwhile, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel’s unbeaten start as Chelsea manager extended to a club record-breaking 14 matches after a comfortable 2-0 victory over Sheffield United as the Blues booked their place to face the Premier League pacesetters.

The Blues looked like they would stroll through to a last-four spot at Wembley when Oliver Norwood scored against his own team in the first half, but a thrilling Sheffield United rally pushed Thomas Tuchel’s side right to the wire.

The Blades were a different side altogether in the second half and should have forced extra-time, but David McGoldrick couldn’t covert a chance beckoning to him from six yards, before substitute Rhian Brewster lashed into the side-netting in stoppage-time.

Hakim Ziyech who was introduced as a substitute made sure of the Chelsea victory – their 10th from 14 games under Tuchel – with their second goal with virtually the last kick of the game as the Blues joined Manchester City and Southampton in the last four.

Leicester City will face Premier League side Southampton in the other semi-final after a huge victory against Manchester United at the King Power Stadium to book a first FA Cup semi-final in 39 years.

Despite missing James Maddison, James Justin, Harvey Barnes, and Ricardo Pereira through injury, the Foxes remained a force to be reckoned with, effectively racing to the lead in the quarter-final tie at the King Power Stadium through Kelechi Iheanacho when the striker took advantage of a horrendous pass from Fred.

United levelled against the run of play through Mason Greenwood, but Leicester City remained the brighter team and regained the lead through a fine strike by Youri Tielemans.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sent on Bruno Fernandes, Luke Shaw, Edinson Cavani and Scott McTominay with 25 minutes left, however, it failed to spark the visitors as Iheanacho wrapped up the game with a back-post header with 10 minutes remaining, netting his seventh goal in his last four appearances.

Southampton, on the other hand, last won the competition in 1976 eased their way into the last four with a routine 3-0 win over south coast neighbours Bournemouth.

Both semi-fianl ties will be played on the weekend of April 17-18 at Wembley, with the final at the same venue on May 15.

The final could be played in front of 20,000 fans as one of the proposed pilot events to test the return of crowds to UK venues following the easing of coronavirus restrictions.
