Football league, Bundesliga to resume on May 9 despite Coronavirus pandemic

German football top-tier league, Bundesliga is set to reopen for action and play spectator-free games.

If the league does indeed open, it will become the first league to reopen after major leagues were forced to indefinitely suspend their activities because of the Coronavirus pandemic.

This decision is thought to be safe enough because of Germany’s approach to combating the spread of the virus. The country led with its approach to the virus, conducting tests early on that led to more detections of the virus and fewer deaths.

The German Football League (DFL), which is in charge of coordinating the activities of the first and second leagues is determined to finish the season. Its 36 professional football clubs had a meeting to discuss reopening the Bundesliga next month.

However, Germany still has more than a couple of questions to answer before they are ready to reopen the league.

“If we start on 9 May, we are ready. If it is later, we will be ready again,” DFL chief executive Christian Seifert said. “For us, what is decisive is what the politicians will decide. It is not for us to decide when. Games without spectators are not what we want – but at the moment the only thing that seems feasible.”
