French Open 2020: Novak Djokovic cruises through past Mikael Ymer to second round

World No.1 Novak Djokovic, over the year, has enjoyed some pretty spectacular seasons throughout his trophy-laden career.

And while he’s gotten his hands on 17 Grand Slams, the Serb simply wants to be the greatest.

He’s openly claimed to be chasing Roger Federer’s (20) and Rafael Nadal’s (19) major haul but missed a glorious chance in New York after he defaulted in the fourth round. It made quite some story worldwide, the 33-year-old exited  Flushing Meadows having fired a ball inadvertently at a line judge.

I have not had any traces of New York in my mind. I’m over it,” he says when he returned to action as champion in Rome.

Now at Roland-Garros, the top seed has taken to court in a similar sequence of dominance reminiscent of his title triumph on Court Philippe-Chatrier four years ago.

Djokovic opened his French Open campaign in style as he beat Swede Mikael Ymer 6-0 6-2 6-3 to begin his quest for an 18th Grand Slam title and a second at Roland Garros.

I am definitely very confident,” says Djokovic, whose comfortable victory over the world No 80 maintained his record of not having lost a match in 2020 barring the default at Flushing Meadows.

I won every match that I played this year except the one in New York where I was disqualified. If you keep on winning, with every match that you win your confidence level raises a notch higher.

Obviously these conditions are different than what we are used to here in French Open. Everyone has been talking about it – the balls, the heavy clay, the cold weather. It all affects the play, of course. But I think it’s quite suitable to my style of the game. I actually enjoyed myself on the court today. I think I played really well. A few hiccups here and there, but I think generally the game is there.

I’m ready physically, mentally, emotionally to go deep in the tournament. Hopefully, I can have another successful year here in Paris.”
