Iker Casillas announces plan to run for president of Spanish football federation

Spanish world cup-winning goalkeeper, Iker Casillas has now announced his new plans to run for the presidency of the Spanish football federation.

The 38-year-old is a part of Porto’s team but has not played since he suffered a heart attack during training in April 2019.

He has not yet officially retired, but he has revealed that he disclosed his plans to the club and informed them of his deepest gratitude.

He will now contest against the federations’ current president, Luis Rubiales later this year when the elections are held.

He said on Twitter during his confirmation of the news: “Yes, I will stand for presidency of the Spanish FA when elections are called. Together we will put our federation at the level of the best football in the world.”

During his time as a goalkeeper, Casillas achieved much and was known all over the world for his proficiency. He won the 2010 World Cup with Spain, and won two European championships in 2008 and 2012.

Before he joined Porto, he was with Real Madrid where he made 275 appearances and helped win three Champions Leagues and five La Liga titles.
