Barcelona left it late but deservedly secured a fifth-successive La Liga victory on the road as Elche made the Blaugranas work hard for the points.

Frenkie de Jong opened the scoring in the 39th-minute and the goal was all that separated both sides until the final minute of the 90 at the Martinez Valero Stadium before Puig headed home to seal a 2-0 victory.

Elche’s goalkeeper Edgar Badia kept them in it to the death, stringing a host of fine saves to deny substitute Trincao twice inside the final seven minutes.

The victory lifted the Catalan side above Sevilla and into the third place, three points adrift of arch-rivals Real Madrid in second, but still ten adrift of leaders Atletico Madrid who won their evening kick-off tie against Valencia.

Atletico Madrid 3-1 Valencia: Joao Felix and Luis Suarez scores to boost title challenge

Portuguese youngster Joao Felix and Uruguayan forward Luis Suarez both combined for goals as Atletico Madrid came from behind to beat Valencia and continue their pursuit of the La Liga title.

Valencia managed to shock the La Liga leaders in the 11th minute with a long-range strike that ended in the back of the net courtesy of Uros Racic but Atleti responded when Felix stuck out a foot to prod home from a corner.

Felix then set up Luis Suarez for a second after the break while Angel Correa came on as a substitute to add Atleti’s third of the day to seal their seventh league win in a row.

Atletico now lead closest challengers Real Madrid, who beat Alaves on Saturday, by seven points with a game in hand.
