Liverpool 3-0 Leicester: Wounded Liverpool roar to second after tearing Leicester apart

Liverpool moved to second behind only Tottenham on  goal difference at the top of the Premier League table after a resounding 3-0 win at Anfield crushed high flying Leicester’s hopes of going top.

The Reds are now on par with leaders Tottenham in points but are placed behind in second place on goal difference having established a new club record of 64 home league games unbeaten. This breaks their previous best run set between February 1978 and January 1981, which was ended by Leicester.

Despite being only second on the log, manager Jurgen Klopp was impressed by the manner in which his team, in the middle of an injury crisis dispatched their opponents.

Liverpool were missing the services of some of their main protagonists in the last few seasons including; Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara, and Mohamed Salah.

“There were a lot of good things. I can’t pick one that pleased me most – may be the performance of James Milner at right-back,” Klopp said.

“He played an exceptional game, first there and then in midfield. That is what we expect from ourselves.”

“The injuries were a massive shock at that moment but the boys have to offer solutions. We have center-halves, they are really young. They are not experienced, you saw the bench tonight.”

Klopp’s team started the game on the front foot and the deadlock was soon broken midway through the first through a Jonny Evans own goal.

The Northern-Irishman headed into his own goal after a corner kick, before Diogo Jota doubled the advantage, applying a finish from a header after Robertson’s delightful cross was preceded by a team move of 30 passes.

Jota replaced the absent Salah who returned a positive Covid-19 test result on international duty with Egypt. The prolific Portuguese forward continued his fine form in front of goal, becoming the first player in the club’s history to score in each of his first four competitive appearances at Anfield.

Leicester upped their game in the second half but Liverpool still looked the better side and were always in control.

Evans headed towards his goal again but his blushes were saved by the woodwork this time before both Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane’s efforts were denied by the woodwork and goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

Firmino eventually registered his name on the score sheet as he rose highest to head in James Milner’s corner past Schmeichel to establish a deserved 3-0 scoreline.
