Premier League Round-up: Manchester City got thumped hard by Jamie Vardy and Leicester City; West Ham puts four past Wolves Plus other results

Jamie Vardy only made 21 touches but his precision earned him a hat-trick at the Etihad Stadium as Leicester ran riot in a stunning 5-2 victory over Manchester City.

Man City, in their usual element, dominated the match early on and even jumped to take the lead through Riyad Mahrez’s superb half volley with his weaker right foot from 15 yards in the 4th minute of the match, but Leicester first shot on goal found the back of the net for an equaliser.

The Foxes were level in the 37th minute as Kyle Walker tripped Vardy in the box; the England striker duly converted the penalty.

Vardy then made it 2-1 against the Citizens with Leicester’s second shot, producing a stunning flick beyond Ederson from close range, before again winning a penalty, this time from Eric Garcia’s foul, and converting for 3-1.

Maddison, who came on as a substitute made it four as he curled in a screamer from 25 yards in the 77th minute, before Nathan Ake’s header looked to have made the scoreline look slightly more respectable.

Youri Tielemans, however, made it five from the penalty spot after Benjamin Mendy had fouled Maddison to pile on the misery on City as he rounded off the fabulous win.

The result means Pep Guardiola has seen his side concede five goals for the first time ever in his 686th game as a manager, while Leicester keep up their 100 percent record this season in the Premier League.

Guardiola says: “I think today the problem was we put extra pressure on ourselves to score the second one and the third one, when they didn’t want to play, just defend and counter-attack.

In that position, we have to be more calm. [We were] anxious… thinking: ‘We are not creating chances, we are not creating chances’, we got nervous, and after, we give away three penalties. When you give away three penalties you cannot win.”

Asked how hard it would be to pick his players up after the defeat, Guardiola says: “Of course, it’s hard, but still it’s the second game in the Premier League. We have to try to see what you have to do to avoid it next time. This is my job. Of course, I feel bad for the guys, for the club. We have to analyse and improve.”

Stats and facts from the match

  • This was just the second time Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has lost his opening home game of a league season, previously doing so while in charge of Barcelona against Hércules in 2010-11 (0-2).
  • It’s only the second time in 323 home matches in all competitions that Guardiola has seen his side concede four goals – the other was in April 2014 (Bayern vs R Madrid).
  • Leicester City are the first side in Premier League history to score three penalties in a single game, while Manchester City are the first side since Spurs in October 2014 to concede three fouls leading to penalties in the same game (v Man City).
  • Leicester’s Jamie Vardy is the only player to score two hat-tricks against sides managed by Pep Guardiola in all competitions, while he is also the only player to score two Premier League hat-tricks against Manchester City overall.
  • Vardy (33y 260d) is the oldest PL hat-trick scorer since Teddy Sheringham in August 2003.

West Ham 4-0 Wolves: Bowen scores brace as Hammers got first Premier League win of the season

Jarrod Bowen scored a brace as West Ham took an impressive route in winning their first Premier League game of the season, hammering Wolves 4-0 on Sunday.

West Ham 4-0 Wolves

The Hammers had performed well against Arsenal last weekend but were unlucky not to take any points from the game, and looked far from a side without a Premier League win this term when Bowen curled home a neat finish early on.

The chances continued to fall for West Ham and they finally added their second when Bowen slotted home from close range after the break.

An own goal ensured West Ham had their third of the game as Tomas Soucek’s header was diverted into the net by Raul Jimenez’s shoulder. Substitute Sebastien Haller then powered a header home in additional time to seal West Ham’s first win of the season.

The victory sees West Ham move up eight places in the table and into tenth and have kept their first clean sheet at home since New Year’s Day. Wolves, meanwhile, drop into 16th.

Tottenham 1-1 Newcastle: Spurs denied 3 points at the last minute

Callum Wilson’s 97th-minute controversial VAR-awarded penalty continued the debate on the new handball interpretation as Newcastle held dominant Spurs to a 1-1 draw.

In a game they controlled from almost start to finish, Lucas Moura slotted the hosts ahead when Harry Kane again turned provider to tee up the Brazilian for his first goal in 22 Premier League games, as the woodwork and some superb goalkeeping from Karl Darlow kept the scoreline respectable in Newcastle’s favour by the break.

In a weekend already fuelled by handball drama at Brighton and Crystal Palace, Newcastle were awarded an injury-time penalty out of nowhere as, after checking the pitchside monitor, referee Peter Bankes adjudged Eric Dier had handled in the area – a decision which saw Jose Mourinho storm out of the dugout and down the tunnel.

In his absence, Wilson beat Hugo Lloris from the spot for an equaliser both sides could barely believe had materialised with their only shot on target of the entire game.

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho: “I don’t think [about the decision]. I think about my team’s performance, which was really good. The first half, amazing, it should have been 3 or 4-0, easy, but Karl Darlow was fantastic and they survived.

The new handball rule for defenders

A foul will be awarded if the ball hits a player who has made themselves “unnaturally bigger” with their arm. IFAB determine that a hand or arm above shoulder height is rarely a “natural position”. There can be exceptions, such as when a player is falling. Leeway can also be given with ricocheted handballs, when it comes off a nearby player or if the player cannot see the ball.

Sheffield United 0-1 Leeds United: The Blades are condemned to a third straight PL defeat

Patrick Bamford hot streak in front of goal continues as he scored an 88th-minute winner to put Leeds United ahead of rivals Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Sunday.

Bamford became the first Leeds player to score in his first three top-flight appearances for the club heading Jack Harrison’s brilliant cross home for his third goal of the season.

Leeds, however, are indebted to an inspired performance from goalkeeper, Illan Meslier, who produced a string of stunning saves to deny John Lundstram and George Baldock in the first half, as the Blades remained the only top-flight team yet to score this season.

Sheffield United, who have now lost their last six Premier League games across this and last season, remain rooted to the foot of the table with no points, while back-to-back wins see Leeds climb to fifth.
