US Open 2020: Novak Djokovic sends British star Kyle Edmund out of the competition; Other results

Novak Djokovic ensured he continued his fantastic form as he knocks out Kyle Edmund from the US Open in the second round of the tournament in New York.

The top seeds experience and ability to weather the early storm saw him take the edge over the British No 2 who opened with vigour and energy. Kyle Edmund lost 7-6 (7-5) 3-6 4-6 2-6 to Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic, who has achieved an unbeaten run of 25 matches, marches on and will face Jan-Lennard Struff in the third round.

Edmund commanded the tempo well on his own serve against the world No 1 in the opening exchange and struck the ball with purpose off both wings.

Djokovic also dominated on his serve despite putting down more drop shots than perhaps was sensible early on, and a tie-break was a fitting finish to the set.

The top seed having played 10 and won 10 tie-breaks this year eventually nicked it. Edmund, on the other hand, had lost his last five at Grand Slams.

However, it was the Brit who secured the early mini-break with a whopping 100mph down-the-line forehand winner.

Djokovic responded back positively with a 123mph second serve ace, but Edmund remained unfazed and took his opportunity well when a cross-court error brought about set point.

The Brit, however, was unable to sustain that level from that point on and a dip at the start of the second set was an indication of what was to come.

He was broken in the fourth game and Djokovic, who is a master of capitalising on weaknesses, seized the opportunity afforded to him.

The Serb constructed the 6-3 set on pinpoint serving, winning 93 per cent of points on his first serve, and ground out the third and fourth, 6-4 6-2 to dispose of Edmund at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Elsewhere in the draw, Alexander Zverev will face Adrian Mannarino next as he was able to dispatch 19-year-old Brandon Nakashima 7-5 6-7 (8-6) 6-3, 6-1 in two hours and 55 minutes on court in the Louis Armstrong Stadium.

“They’re two players who are not here and they’re two of the greatest, so obviously it will have a little bit of an effect,” said Zverev.

But this year’s US Open is different in many ways – we don’t have spectators, the crowd is gone, and stuff like that.

Obviously it’s not the same, but at some point, those two will retire as well. And we will play every tournament without them.”

David Goffin also secured his fourth consecutive third-round spot, after defeating South African Lloyd Harris in four sets and would next face Filip Krajinovic.

Stefanos Tsitsipas made light work of American Maxime Cressy with a 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 6-4 win to set up an encounter with Borna Coric, while 12th seed Denis Shapovalov went a set down to Kwon Soonwoo but came back for a 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 6-4 6-2 win.
