Premier League Roundup: Man City edge closer to title with win over Fulham; Leeds kept Chelsea at bay

Manchester City beat Fulham 3-0 on Saturday night and moved 17 points clear at the top of the table as Sergio Aguero finally scored his first Premier League goal in over a year.

Pep Guardiola’s side was kept at an arms-length throughout the first 45 minutes but at the start of the second half, they took the lead through John Stones’ close-range finish.

Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus then took advantage of a mix-up at the back to double the visitors’ lead as City continues to show hunger and zest going forward.

Aguero – making just his second start for City since October and captaining his team – provided the final moment of magic from a penalty on the hour-mark, ending a run of 13 games without a goal stretching back to January 2020.

With the result, City now need just 14 points from their remaining eight matches to be sure of the title, while Scott Parker’s team stay in the relegation zone on goal difference behind Brighton, who have two games in hand on the west Londoners.

Leeds 0-0 Chelsea: Entertaining duel at Elland Road ends in a stalemate

Premier League Roundup

Chelsea‘s unbeaten run since Tuchel joined continued to be the topic of discussion as they remained unbeaten with a stroke of luck too against Leeds United on Saturday.

Both sides struck the post but Chelsea would feel bad for not sealing maximum points as their push for a top-four finish took a minor hit in a 0-0 draw at Leeds.

Chelsea nearly took an early lead in unusual style as Luke Ayling’s clearance fired straight into Diego Llorente and back onto his own crossbar, shortly after Leeds had been denied an eighth-minute opener when Patrick Bamford was ruled just offside in teeing up Tyler Roberts to score.

Leeds then struck the woodwork themselves when Roberts’ wonderful effort crashed off the goal frame thanks to a fingertip touch by Edouard Mendy.

Then 10 minutes after half-time, the goalkeeper was again in fine form to readjust and keep out Raphinha’s close-range shot, while Kai Havertz and Antonio Rudiger tested Illan Meslier at the other end of the pitch.

But some wasteful Chelsea finishing, failing to beat the Frenchman despite registering seven shots on target, leaves them three points ahead of fifth-placed West Ham – who have played two games fewer than their London rivals.
