PSG 0-1 Marseille: Neymar among 5 players sent off as Marseille win in Le Classique

Le Classique was overshadowed by late drama as PSG’s Neymar alongside Kurzawa, and Maksimovic were sent off, while Amavi and Benedetto were also sent off from the Marseille side.

Neymar, however, was heard making claims of a racist remark as he walked off the pitch in Marseille’s smash-and-grab 1-0 win against Ligue 1 champions, PSG, on Sunday.

Marseille got their first league win over Paris Saint Germain since November 2011, condemning the defending champions to their second straight league defeat after they suffered a 1-0 opening day setback at Lens.

A full-scale brawl broke out on the pitch in the last minute of stoppage time, forcing referee, Jerome Brisard, to send off PSG’s Laywin Kurzawa and Leandro Paredes as well as Marseille’s duo of Dario Benedetto and Jordan Amavi.

Neymar also saw red apparently for striking Alvaro Gonzalez in the back of the head, having had several altercations with the Spanish defender during the game.

While leaving the pitch, Neymar was shown speaking into the pitchside microphones claiming to one of the match officials that he was racially abused on the pitch.

Neymar tweeted after the game, saying his “only regret” was not hitting Marseille defender Gonzalez in the face.

He later posted: “It’s easy for VAR to capture my aggression. Now I want to see it capture the footage of the racist calling me a monkey son of a b****. That’s what I want to see!

I do tricks and I get punished. A tap on the head and I get sent off. What about them?

Gonzalez, however, denied the accusation on social media, claiming there is “no place for racism” and he has had a “clean career“.

Earlier during the match, Thauvin scored after steering in a Dimitri Payet free-kick inside the near post just after PSG had come close through Marco Verratti and Neymar, who also missed a pair of chances in the second half.

Angel Di Maria’s effort in the 62nd minute was also ruled out and Marseille substitute Benedetto’s scorcher was also scrapped two minutes later for an offside infringement.

PSG, who missed several first-team regulars who had contracted coronavirus, fought hard to get at least a draw in the closing stages but Marseille’s rugged defence held firm and have now won their first two games this season.
