Romain Vandendorpe is now being called “ice man” after he set a new world record for the longest time spent sitting in ice cubes.
Romain Vandendorpe is a 34-year-old health worker who lives in Wattrelos, a town in France. On Saturday 19 December 2020, he spent two hours, 35 minutes and 43 seconds in ice cubes.
He was buried up to his neck in the ice stored in a plexiglass cabin. Vandendorpe broke the previous “ice man” record by 40 minutes.
He engaged in this human ability defying feat to raise money for children with cancer. 50 individuals were on the scene where Vandendorpe set this new record.

According to him, he had trained for several hours per day before he attempted to break the world record. He said; “If we train, if we give our all, we can advance (and) obtain results that can improve things.”
Romain Vandendorpe, the new “ice man”, said he trained in an ice-cold jacuzzi, in a 500-litre freezer and then stayed buried in snow in the French ski resort of Chamonix.
He trained using neuro-cognitive techniques. This helped him overcome human limits by putting himself in a state of daydreaming to overcome suffering.
Proceeds from this new world record will go to the Wonder Augustine association founded in Wattrelos after the death of a four-year-old girl called Augustine two years ago from brain cancer.
To make money, the head of Wonder Augustine association said that interested people can donate one euro for every minute that Romain Vandendorpe spent immersed in the freezing ice cube.
Vandendorpe himself started the fundraising because he had met Augustine before her death and she had made a lasting impression on him.
