UEFA Nations League Round up: England beaten by Denmark after Maguire and Reece James see red; Other results

England 0:1 Denmark

Manchester United’s captain Harry Maguire saw red for two silly tackles while Chelsea’s Reece James also got sent off as England were beaten 0-1 by Denmark at Wembley in their Nations League group.

England’s task became unsurmountable with two big incidents in the space of three first-half minutes. First Maguire was sent off for a second yellow card before Christian Eriksen scored to put Denmark ahead via the penalty spot after Kyle Walker brought down Thomas Delaney.

Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel kept Denmark from conceding with a world-class save from Mason Mount’s close-range header in the second half, while Simon Kjaer’s brilliant last-gasp block denied Conor Coady late on.

Reece James also got sent off after full-time for his protestations towards the officials, as England suffered only their second competitive defeat at home in 13 years.

The result, however, paired with Belgium’s win over Iceland, means England must avoid defeat away at Belgium in their next Nations League clash on November 15 to stand a chance of winning their group and repeat their successful 2018 campaign.

Italy 1-1 Netherlands: Both teams inseparable as Poland take full advantage

Italy slipped away from remaining top of their Nations League group as they shared the spoils with the Netherlands in an entertaining 1-1 draw.

Nations League results

Lorenzo Pellegrini opened the scoring on 16 minutes with a cool finish after he was found with a perfect through-ball from Nicolo Barella.

But the lead lasted less than ten minutes as new United man Donny van de Beek smashed a shot from inside the box beat Gianluigi Donnarumma from close range.

Both teams had chances to grab all three points but were wasteful in front of goals and ultimately a draw was a fair result.

Robert Lewandowski grabbed a brace in Poland’s 3-0 win over Bosnia as the Poles topple Italy, who was held to a 1-1 home draw by the Netherlands as group leaders with seven points from four games, one ahead of Italy.

Norway getting stronger with yet another win over Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland’s woes continue after Stuart Dallas’ own goal handed Norway a 1-0 victory in Oslo with the Irish team still without a UEFA Nations League win.

Nations League round up

Erling Haaland was denied twice in the first half by stand-in goalkeeper Trevor Carson while Josh Magennis squandered a glorious chance to break the deadlock when his close-range shot was saved by Andre Hansen.

But despite having defended resolutely, Northern Ireland were finally undone by a set-piece in the 67th minute, with Martin Odegaard’s corner striking the arm of substitute Dallas to find the net.

The result leaves Northern Ireland on one point from their four games in this year’s Nations League competition, while Norway moves onto second place with nine points, level with leaders Austria who won 1-0 in Romania.
