Ultimate guide on how to apply fake eyelashes: Pro-tips, choosing, removing and risks

In this article, I’ll be talking about how to apply fake eyelashes because what girl doesn’t like to have those dreamy looks that long eyelashes impart?

Long eyelashes enhance the way you look and they bring out the beauty of your eyes. Many women have really short natural eyelashes that make their eyes look dull. If you belong to this category then fake eyelashes might be the thing you need if you want to improve the look of your eyes.

Furthermore, eyelashes aren’t just for looks but have some practical functions, for example, to keep out dust and other foreign objects from getting into your eyes. So, fake eyelashes can help to protect your eyes while adding a sexy touch to them so you can look as hot as you want every day.

However, this article isn’t only about how to apply false eyelashes, it is also about providing you with the necessary information about fake eyelashes to arm you with the knowledge to get the best out of them. So, in addition to strip eyelashes, I also explained how to apply individual eyes, how to remove fake eyelashes, types of fake eyelashes, choosing the best eyelashes for your eye type, the cons of using fake eyelashes, how to apply mascara and tips to help you get the best out of your lashes.

Now, let’s dive in.

Types of fake eyelashes

Before going into the details of how to apply fake eyelashes, I will like to bring your attention to the different types of fake eyelashes available.

Fake eyelashes can be worn every single day although some women only wear them on special occasions.

There are temporary and semi-permanent eyelashes and you can wear them as often as you like.

Temporary eyelashes should not be worn while showering, sleeping or swimming, so you will have to remove them if you want to engage in any activity that will likely bring water to your eyes.

Fake eyelashes come in different types. Some of the common types are mink, faux mink, sable, silk and synthetic.

Each type has unique effects and outlook on your eyes. You just have to decide on the right one that suits your personal style and preference.

Mink Eyelashes

Mink eyelashes are very popular. They look exactly like natural eyelashes as they are made from human hair.

They are lightweight, thin and do not put pressure on the natural eyelashes, which also accounts for their popularity. Mink false eyelashes are also moderately priced and so are within the budget of most people. There are varieties of them on Amazon. You can also check the reviews before placing an order.

Faux Mink Eyelashes

Faux mink eyelashes are close to mink eyelashes but are synthetic. This type of fake eyelashes sometimes cost less than mink eyelashes although some of them cost a bit more. Faux mink eyelashes are great for you if you don’t like the feel of human hair on your eyes. Another wow factor about these types of eyelashes is that they don’t lose their curl when wet.

Sable Eyelashes

Sable eyelashes are made from Sable fur. They are thinner than other eyelashes and give a wispy appearance. They are a bit pricey but if you can afford then, go get them and you will definitely love the look on you.

Silk Eyelashes

Silk eyelashes make your eyes look fuller. They are thick at the bottom with the end being thinner. This type of fake eyelashes makes your eyelashes glossier and darker.

Synthetic Eyelashes

If you like a bold and daring look then go for synthetic lashes. They’re cheaper and you don’t need to touch up mascara on these eyelashes. They are just perfect for a limited budget. Also, since you don’t need mascara to go with them, you can also save money on that as well.

Choosing the best eyelashes for your eye type

Before discussing the specific steps on how to apply fake eyelashes, I want to mention the several things you need to note before starting. This is very important because you want your fake eyelashes to enhance your look, not detract from it. You certainly do not want to look like a cartoon character, unless you do. Joking.

So, before you apply fake eyelashes, you have to first find eyelashes that suit your eyes. How do you do that?

It’s easy when you know your eye shape, so we will go through the common eye shapes briefly and the type of eyelashes that are most suitable for them.

Deep-set eyes

You have deep-set eyes if your eyes are set deep into your head while making you look like you have a prominent brow bone. You should use lashes that are long at the centre.

Actress Natalie Portman is an example of a celebrity who has deep-set eyes. Another example is the star of the Keeping Up With The Kardashian show, Kim Kardashian.

Downturned eyes

If the outer corners of your eyes appear to be drawing downwards, then you should use short strip lashes that are longer in the outer corners. This will lift your eyes.

Actress Anne Hathaway and singer Katy Perry are among famous celebrities who have downturned eyes.

Hooded eyes

You have hooded eyes if the crease on your eyelid is not visible. A thin strip lash in a shorter length would be best for you.

Examples of celebrities with hooded eyes are actors, Jennifer Lawrence and Blakely Lively. Model Kate Moss also has hooded eyes.

Prominent eyes

You have prominent eyes when your eyelids seem to project in your eye socket. Use strip lashes at the bottom of your eyes alongside the top lashes. This will make your eyes look less prominent.

Mila Kunis is an example of a celebrity with a prominent eye type. Another example is socialite Nicole Richie

Almond eyes

As suggested by the name, these types of eyes are shaped like almonds. They taper into a beautiful point at both the inner and outer corners. Most lashes are suitable for almond-shaped eyes and you can go full lashes that are evenly distributed.

Mel B and Beyonce are examples of celebrities with almond-shaped eyes.

How to apply fake eyelashes (strips also known as eyelash extensions)

Now that I’ve covered the different types of false eyelashes available and what type of lashes to go for, I will now show you how to apply fake eyelashes in this section.

As you might expect, applying fake eyelashes can be a bit complicated especially for a beginner. But don’t worry, it is not rocket science even if it were, there are a lot of women rocket scientists out there so I am very confident you will get to master the techniques quite easily. By the way, I’m not being sexist, I used women as an example because the assumption is that this post will be predominantly of interest to more women than men even though some men use false lashes as well.

1. Check the eyelashes

Check the size of the lashes. Make sure the eyelashes are not too wide for your eyes. Hold the strip of the lashes against your eyelids and trim them if they are too wide. Be careful not to over trim the sides. It’s important to trim them so that they look as natural as possible.

2. Apply the glue

Apply the glue to the outer side of the eyelash strip with a small brush or applicator. Wait for the glue to dry before fixing on your lashes.

You can also add a thin line of glue on your hand then carefully rub the outer side of the eyelash strip across it.

3. Fix the eyelashes

Fix the strip on your eyelid. Bring it as close as you can to your natural lashes. Place the strip down from above not from the front so that it can rest on the lash line.

4. Dry It

Don’t touch or press the strip. Instead, let the glue dry naturally on its own.

5. Apply mascara

Now, apply mascara to your eyelashes. This is to blend your false eyelashes with your real ones. This is perfect for a  natural appearance.

6. Apply your eyeliner

Apply eyeliner along your upper eyelids. Use the eyeliner to fill in any space between your natural lashes and the fake eyelashes.

Pro-tips for applying fake eyelash strips

  • Use a tweezer to keep the eyelashes in place if your fingers don’t seem steady enough.
  • Keep your hands steady when applying your eyeliner. This will ensure you draw a straight line that looks professional.
  • Apply glue on your lashes for at least 15 seconds then blow air on it before you apply it.
  • Apply your eye makeup before glueing your eyelashes.
  • Always apply a dab of mascara when the glue is dry.
  • Remove your fake eyelashes before sleeping as keeping it on can irritate your eyes.
  • Apply individual lashes the same way you apply strips of eyelashes. Start from the outer corner and work your way up.
  • After removing your false eyelashes, use a makeup wipe to remove the mascara and eyeliner.
  • If you intend to reuse your fake eyelashes, make sure to clean them thoroughly. Do this with a makeup remover to wipe off mascara, adhesive and eyeliner. Then store for later use.
  • Apply your fake eyelashes where you can see clearly. This way you get to position your lashes properly.
  • If you want to curl your lashes, simply move your mascara wand across your lashes in a back and forth motion. Then curl your lashes at the edges. Hold the mascara wand on the lashes and count to ten then release it to get your curly lashes.
  • If you are unable to curl your eyelashes with a wand then use mascara and eyelash separator. Use the eyelash separator at the end of your eyelashes before applying the mascara. This will ensure the mascara doesn’t clump while adding volume to your eyelashes. Then apply three layers of mascara from root to tip.

What are individual eyelashes?

Individual lashes are alternative to eyelash strips and also cheaper although applying them can be a bit more time-consuming compared to full lashes. They can be applied to the eyelid or directly to the eyelash with a glue.

They usually come in clusters of three so might be too heavy for the natural lash to support but they offer you the flexibility to add the lashes to only the areas of the eyes you want.

Difference between individual eyelashes and strip eyelashes

Individual eyelashes are pieces of lashes that come in different lengths based on the part of eyelids they get fixed on. On the other hand, strip lashes are whole bunches of eyelashes, which cover the width of the eyes.

Individual eyelashes take more time to apply than strip lashes.  The good thing is that you can blend in individual lashes with your natural eyelashes.

Strip eyelashes are applied faster but do not look as natural as individual fake eyelashes.

Yet, what they have in common is that they both make your eyes look great, lively and sexy.

Before you apply individual eyelashes

  1. Select your individual eyelashes. It’s best to get eyelashes that match your natural eyelashes colour.
  2. Clean your eyelids. Use makeup remover to get rid of any leftover makeup on your eyes.
  3. Pour a little of the eyelash glue on your hands. You will use it to coat the bottom portion of your eyelashes.  Black glue is great if you intend to apply heavy makeup. While white glue is better if you prefer a natural look.
  4. Test the eyelashes placement before applying them. Select a cluster of eyelashes with your tweezers. Then hold them in place on your eyes. If it looks good in that spot, add your glue.

How to apply individual eyelashes

  1. Apply the glue to the lashes. Use tweezers to hold the base of the lashes and gently drag it free from the pack. The base of the lashes should face you, while the ends of the lashes should be in another direction. Carefully dip the base of the lashes in the small drop of glue
  2. Use only enough glue so the eyelashes won’t fall off but not too much. Wait for 15-30 seconds before applying the eyelashes to your eyelids.
  3. Glue the eyelashes on. Then bring the tweezers up to your opened eye. Place the eyelashes right above your real eyelashes. Start in the middle of your top eyelid. Once the eyelash is on your eyelid, use the tweezers to gently “brush” the lash upward.
  4. Individual eyelashes can be applied to the top and bottom lash lines, but fake eyelashes look really natural when applied to the top eyelid alone. If you place the lashes wrongly, quickly readjust it before the glue dries.
  5. Apply each individual lashes one after the other. You can apply all the pieces that come in the pack if you want fuller eyelashes or just a few.
  6. Start applying the lashes from the centre of your eye till you get to the corner of your eyes. Then use longer lashes as you move outward. Fill the inner corner of your eyes with the shorter lashes in the pack.
  7. After applying your eyelashes, wait for 10-15 minutes for the glue to dry. Then touch the top of the lashes gently to check if it’s still sticky.
  8. When they dry, use a curler to curl your fake eyelashes and make them look natural.
  9. Apply the rest of your makeup. Then apply mascara to both eyes to blend everything.

Pro tips on how to apply individual eyelashes

  • Eyelashes come in different lengths.  Usually, there are small, medium and long length eyelashes in a pack.
  • Use 3-5 eyelashes towards the centre and outer corner of the eye. You can increase it if you want a bit of cat eyes.
  • The smaller eyelashes are to be used at the inside corners of the eyes. While the medium and long lashes are to be used for the middle and outer edges of your eyes.

Applying mascara to your eyelashes

No lesson on how to apply false eyelashes will be complete without also mentioning mascara applications. Unless using synthetic eyelashes, you need to use mascara to blend your fake eyelashes with your natural ones.

Aside from the need to use mascara on your false eyelashes, mascara is also used to enhance the eyes even when you are not using false eyelashes. It can add volume, define and lengthen them.

So, here are quick tips to note before you apply that mascara. These tips apply whether or not you are applying mascara to your natural or false eyelashes.

  • Use a lengthening mascara that has a smaller brush with thick bristles. This is if you have short eyelashes. A small wand enables you to easily coat each eyelash.
  • You can also use lengthening mascara even if your eyelashes are full. Choose one with a long brush that has evenly-spaced bristles. This will help to separate your eyelashes.
  • You should only use mascara for three months.
  • Use waterproof mascara only for special events as it is difficult to remove and could dry out your eyelashes.
  • Select your shade. Though black works great for everyone and makes your eyelashes look thick and long.
  • Get an eyelash curler. This will make your eyelashes look bigger and brighter.

How to apply mascara

  • Apply your other eye makeup before using mascara. Then curl your lashes. Twist the mascara wand back and forth in the tube before pulling out. That way enough mascara clings to the wand.
  • Wipe off the excess mascara on a tissue so that the right amount of mascara stays on the wand.
  • Hold yourself from blinking when looking at the mirror. Open your mouth as it makes it hard for you to blink. Then place the wand against the eyelashes and move it back and forth.
  • Be sure to apply it on the roots of the eyelashes to make them appear longer.
  • Pull the wand out toward the tips of your lashes with a back and forth motion or a little wiggle. This adds volume and length.
  • Coat your eyelashes for a second time. Do a maximum of three coats as the more mascara you use, the more likely it would clump on your eyelashes.

How to remove fake eyelashes

Removing fake eyelashes isn’t as difficult as it used to be anymore. However, the method of removing fake eyelashes differ based on their eyelash type.

Removing semi-permanent lashes

If the hair to take off is few, you can go ahead and remove it yourself. Wash your face before taking it off. Then use makeup remover to wipe out the makeup and dirt.

After this, fill a bowl with hot water. The hot water would be used to soften the glue. Next, cover your head with a towel and bend over the bowl for 10 minutes. Allow the steam from the water to get over your face.

After 10 minutes, dab a cotton bud in olive oil and run it back and forth your lash line. Do this till the extension falls off.

Temporary eyelashes

These types of fake eyelashes are not waterproof. So, you simply soak a cotton bud in olive oil and hold it over your closed eye for a minute. Do this repeatedly till the lash strip loosens. Then lift it off gently.

Risks of fake eyelashes

Fake eyelashes make you look sexy but before you get those fake eyelashes, you need to know that using them comes with some risks.

The eyes are very sensitive and one can easily get infected or blinded if one is not careful. Some of the eye issues that may develop from wearing fake eyelashes include:

1. Allergies

Before fixing fake eyelashes, find out if you are allergic to lashes, glue or the materials used to make the fake eyelashes. You may not be able to find out if you are allergic to any of these till you get your fake lashes fixed.

However, if your eyes suddenly begin to swell, sting or burn, that’s a sure sign of an allergy. You may need to remove your fake eyelashes and fix it on another time. If the swelling, burning and stinging continues then you should discontinue the use of fake eyelashes.

2. Eye damage

Your eyes could get infected and damaged if lashes glue gets into them or if your eyelids are not properly cleaned after using your fake eyelashes. This inevitably happens sometimes if you have little experience in fixing fake eyelashes.

So it’s always best to get your fake eyelashes professionally done. Or if you would rather do it yourself, then be sure to learn how to fix fake lashes thoroughly – hopefully, this article will help you to master the art. This would minimise the chances of you hurting your eyes by mistake.

3. Thinned natural lashes

Removing fake eyelashes is as important as putting them on. When removing fake eyelashes, it’s best to follow the right procedure.

This could be either through the use of olive oil or steaming water depending on if your lashes are individual-based or strips, semi-permanent or temporary. Yanking off fake eyelashes could result in your natural lashes being pulled off and this could leave them looking sparse.
