Heart to heart: Saying thank you to Coronavirus helpers on the frontline

When the novel Coronavirus first emerged in China at the beginning of January, many never envisaged that it would come to a total lockdown in March/April.

While the rest of us are on lockdown and agonizing about spending time in our houses, there are some people out there who are making sure that the world is still running with some semblance of normalcy, taking care of the sick and making important deliveries.

To say thank you to these essential workers during this time, a number of gestures have been made including videos and, in particular, a special Google doodle to appreciate their selfless service at this time.

Essential workers include delivery workers, healthcare professionals, janitors, and other workers who are working around the clock to make sure that those on lockdown have what they need to keep the rest of the world safe.

Earlier this month, Google announced that they would spend this month paying homage to essential workers, a move that we all should be emulating.

All over the world, healthcare professionals and delivery personnel have been putting themselves on the line to get essentials to people at home. Some healthcare professionals have even lost their lives in the line of service, including Nigeria’s first known healthcare casualty, Dr. Chugbo Emeka.

On 13 April, Google shared a doodle to say thank you to Coronavirus helpers, including doctors and healthcare professionals, writing: “Doctors, nurses and medical workers, you truly are the nation’s heartbeat. This is for you”

Today, Thursday, 16 April, the tech giant honoured delivery personnel, writing:

Not all heroes wear capes. Some wear gloves, hairnets and masks. Thank you, food service workers for keeping us fed. Our *hearts* are filled with gratitude.”

While you may not have the capacity to appreciate these essential workers on a scale as large as Google’s, you can do your own part to show them that you appreciate their extraordinary sacrifice.

Health workers around the world have made several videos and shared several messages to urge people to stay at home in order to reduce the spread of the virus and flatten the curve.

Donate to your local charity if you can, stay at home, wash your hands, and minimize contact, even with delivery workers. They will definitely appreciate it.

How are you taking the time to appreciate essential workers during this time? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section below.
