Heart to heart: Avoiding the huge ball and chain that is regret

Regret is one of the most soul-crushing things that a person can feel, ask the hundreds of millions of people who feel it every day.

It is a literal ball and chain that you drag with you everywhere you go and no matter what you’re doing. You may be in the middle of dancing with friends, working, telling a particularly juicy story, or watching a movie, and you’ll feel such a huge wave of regret that you have to take huge breaths to calm yourself.

Regret is the thing that happens when you make decisions that cause you to remember them with tears in your eyes sometime down the line.

Maybe you married the person that was convenient while letting the person you love go.

Or maybe you’ve always wanted to be a writer, but you procrastinated and didn’t do the work. Or you gave into the divorce when your partner asked simply because you thought it was best at the time.

For whatever reason, making bad decisions usually lead to regret. Sometimes, it is something that is easily fixed, and other times, it is something that you will have to live with all your life.

American actor, Ben Affleck spoke recently about how much he regrets divorcing his ex-wife, Jennifer Garner. He described divorcing his wife of 10 years as the biggest regret of his life.

“Shame is really toxic. There is no positive byproduct of shame. It’s just stewing in a toxic, hideous feeling of low self-worth and self-loathing,” he said.

Nobody deserves to feel that way about anything, but regret, like all the other bad emotions that we feel, has a way of holding on, becoming like a leech, hard to shake.

Ben Affleck tried to drink it away but it didn’t work. Well, that’s because toxic coping mechanisms will not work. To get out of feeling regret every day of your life, you have to retrace your steps and either correct your actions or try to make peace with them.

If you signed a deal while you were drunk that says you’ll give all your money away, try to reason with them. Or go to court.

If you divorced your partner when you didn’t think it through, try to find out what may have caused the divorce, then talk it through. Blac Chyna’s mother, Tokyo Toni, did just marry her ex-husband.

Regret is a terrible emotion to feel. It will coil around you and drag you down to the lowest levels of yourself until you begin to question everything, even your own sanity.

To avoid it, think things through and make better decisions. Barring that, try to fix things, even though things look impossible.
