SMART goals – SPECIFIC
This is a clear definition of what you want to achieve or attain. Your goal must be clear and well defined. Vague or generalized goals are unhelpful because they don’t provide sufficient direction. Here you have a clear distinction between “I want to make money this year” and “I want to make 200 million dollars this year.” Make it as easy as you can to get where you want to go by defining precisely where you want to end up. Specific goals help you answer questions like what, why, how, when, where, and with whom.
SMART goals – MEASURABLE
Include precise amounts, dates, and so on in your goals so you can measure your degree of success. If your goal is simply defined as “To make $200million this year” how will you know when you have been successful? In one month’s time if you have an increase in your profit, can you be able to track it and know how it came in? This will help you know the strategy to apply and what not to do the next month. Do you have a way to measure expenses so as not run dry while trying to make more money? Without a way to measure your success, you miss out on the celebration that comes with knowing you have actually achieved something.
SMART goals – ATTAINABLE
Here, you consider whether you have the effort, time, resources, and whatever it needs to achieve this goal of yours. Make sure that it’s possible to achieve the goals you set. If you set a goal that you have no hope of achieving, you will only demoralize yourself and erode your confidence. If your goal is to make $200million this year, do you have the kind of business, the kind of brand, the kind of idea or the kind of initiative that can birth or help you attain such money? However, resist the urge to set goals that are too easy. Accomplishing a goal that you didn’t have to work hard for can be anticlimactic at best, and can also make you fear setting future goals that carry a risk of non-achievement. By setting realistic yet challenging goals, you hit the balance you need. These are the types of goals that require you to “raise the bar” and they bring the greatest personal satisfaction.
SMART goals – RELEVANT
Is reaching or attaining your goals relevant to you? Does it have anything to do with who you are and where you are headed to in life? Goals should be relevant to the direction you want your life and career to take. By keeping goals aligned with this, you’ll develop the focus you need to get ahead and do what you want. If it requires more training, you go get it. If it requires more teammates, go get them. If it requires taking up a specific course(s), go get it. If you set widely scattered and inconsistent goals, it will waste and fritter your time and your life away.
SMART goals – TIME-BASED
There is this popular saying that goes, “Time is money.” Your goals must have a deadline. Deadlines are what makes most people switch into action. So, try to set deadlines for yourself. Give yourself a target and time to achieve such target. When you are working on a deadline, your sense of urgency increases and achievement will come that much quicker. Also, try to keep the timeline or deadline realistic and flexible, that way you can keep morale high and equally preserve the learning path of achieving your goals.
