Meet the watch that sprouts a garden

Ever seen or worn a watch with a blossoming garden before? No? I guessed so.

But, here we are with one from a famous watchmaker.

Swiss watchmaker, H. Moser & Cie, has created a watch that sprouts a garden. The watchmaker, who had once created a timepiece made of Swiss cheese, unveiled the “Moser Nature Watch” at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) luxury watch trade fair in Genève, taking centre stage in the company’s booth. Funny enough, the amazing and one-of-a-kind watch was not for sale. It is meant as both a publicity stunt and a serious statement about the fragile nature of the planet and the lengths H. Moser goes through to ensure that their luxury watches are sustainably produced.

The 42mm steel case is covered with succulents, moss, mini echeveria, cress, spiderwort and onion sets, all of which need to be watered twice per day. The dial contains natural mineral stone and lichen from the Swiss Alps. It is powered by the in-house, hand-wound HMC 327 calibre with a three-day power reserve. The natural rubber strap has a cloth-like cover with grass growing out of it. “Lawn must be maintained regularly using a mini clipper,” according to the press material.

For Edouard Meylan, H. Moser CEO, this weird but beautiful piece is not the first of his products as he has made similar statements in the past that combine humour and seriousness with a watch case made of Swiss cheese, and the Alps Watch, a tongue-in-cheek mechanical response to the Apple Watch.
