Two straight men get married to avoid paying huge inheritance tax

Do you remember that time during the 2016 US presidential election campaign it was revealed that a then-presidential candidate Donald Trump had not paid any federal income tax for years?

He even admitted it during one of the presidential debates and according to him, he took advantage of the US tax loopholes to avoid paying those taxes. So legally, he didn’t commit any crime. Ethically? That’s not within our remit to discuss.

Anyway, that was exactly what this story reminded us – taking advantage of legal loopholes to serve one’s purposes.

The story is of two straight Irish men, Matt Murphy, 83, and Michael O’Sullivan, 58, who got married in Ireland so as to avoid paying inheritance tax that could cost up to €50,000. Yes, you read that right. Depending on how you wanna look at it, kudos for friendship or shame to tax cheaters? As for us, we know whose side we are on.

Matt Murphy, 83, and Michael O’Sullivan, 58.

Matt and Micheal have been living together in Matt’s house in Dublin, Ireland. Michael is Matt’s carer. They were not in a romantic relationship just good friends who care for each other. They have been friends for almost 30 years.

Matt was never married, while Michael was married to a woman but not anymore. He came to live with Matt when he became homeless and also became the carer for the 83-year-old Matt who is battling with giant cell arteritis.

Matt said that he couldn’t pay me as a carer,” Michael tells Irish Mirror.

He said the only way he could pay me was to leave me the house,” he adds.

After the cost of inheritance tax became apparent, meaning Michael would have to sell the home, Matt suggested the friends simply committed to each other for life. At their wedding, Michael spoke of Matt’s kindness, while his husband sang Willie Nelson’s Let the World Go By.

We guess the taxman just gonna look elsewhere for the  next victim payer.
