Today in history: BBC was launched

Today is Wednesday, Oct. 31, the 304th day of 2018, 64 days left till the end of the year.

Today in history, November 2 1936, the British Broadcasting Corp (BBC) Television Service was launched from Alexandra Palace transmitter in London.

According to the website, EDN Network, The BBC became the world’s first regular public television service with a high level of image resolution with a radius of 25 miles.

Later renamed BBC TV and finally as it is today BBC One, the service has been in continuous service since 1936 except during World War II (1939 – 1946)  when it was taken off the air.

During the first three years of its opening, the prohibitive cost of television limited the number of viewers to 20,000. The service gradually increased viewership to about 40,000. After the BBC reopened in 1946, 100,000 viewers in London watched a broadcast of the victory parade celebrating the end of the war.

Right now, the BBC can boast of over 265 million viewers.
