On this day in history in 2015, Lucara Diamond Corporation announced the discovery of the world’s second-largest diamond – a 1,111-carat stone. This diamond is second only to the 3,106-carat Cullinan diamond which was found in South Africa in 1905.
The massive stone, which measures 65 mm by 56 mm by 40mm (about the size of a tennis ball) is Type-IIa gem quality. This diamond is the largest found in over a century, and thus far has no price tag or potential buyer.
It is extremely hard to estimate the value of the diamond given the unknown colour, clarity and cutting. With a diamond of this calibre the process of getting it cut, polished, and sold will likely take years to complete.
To provide an estimate of final selling price, Lucara once sold a 341.9-carat diamond of roughly the same quality for $20.6 million, that is, each carat was sold for $60,251.
