Will you pay extra for your kids to learn a British accent?

News about town says some parents living in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja are paying extra for their children to learn a British accent.

The classes are quaintly named: “elocution, enunciation and diction.” And for the privilege to participate, parents pay between N10,000 – N25,000 per term in addition to their children’s regular school fees.

The story was broken by the News Agency Nigeria (NAN) who interviewed some parents concerning the fad.

One of those spoken to said hearing her children speak with a  British accent gives her the feeling that her children are receiving a good education. Another believes the skill will assist his children to better adapt in today’s globalised world. Yet another says it’s a matter of pride and social distinction when her children speak with the accent.

But not everyone is convinced or on board the idea.

A parent thinks it’s a form of neocolonialism and a status thing with some parents. One of those interviewed answered that she would rather that her children learn the correct usage than acquire an accent.

She says: “My children are normal and speak good English without an accent and I am okay with it. The situation is alarming as parents are competing with it, even in Churches.

You hear some parents bragging that their children can speak with a British accent, to them, education is complete.

It just shows that our mentality is still very low in this part of the world. I see it as an inferiority complex.

What do you think, would you pay extra to have your children learn a British accent?
