The Holy City has placed a ban on the use of cigarettes on the grounds because of health reasons.
The Spokesman of the Holy See, Greg Burke, had giving the reason behind the ban as clearly being due to the adverse effect tobacco smoke inhaled had on people, he said to reporters: “The motive is very simple: the Holy See cannot be cooperating with a practice that is clearly harming the health of people.”
The World Health Organization (WHO) had reported that of the 7 million people killed by smoking related sicknesses that 6 million die as smokers while 890,000 are non-smokers killed because of inhaling second-hand smokes. Greg Burke quoted this statistics as a reason behind the Vatican’s decision to stop the use of cigarettes that were sold at discount prices to the workers on the ground and also the pensioners.
Although, the Vatican made some profit from cigarettes companies that did business on the ground, the authorities see such profits as unrighteous because it lead to deterioration of people’s health. Large cigars have however not been banned yet as it is seen as still less harmful because the smoke is not inhaled.
