12-person committee charged with selecting a Nigerian entry for the 2020 Academy Awards

A 12-person Nigerian Oscars Selection Committee (NOSC) has been constituted for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), ahead of the 2020 Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars.

The objective is to present a unified Nigerian entry for the 92 Academy Awards coming up in Los Angeles on the 9th of February 2020.

This is because the Academy Awards allows for foreign film participation under the International Feature Film Category reserved for films produced outside of the United States with largely non-English dialogues.

The 12-person committee of Nollywood stakeholders includes Chineze Anyaene as chairman, Mildred Okwo, Mahmood Ali-Balogun, Ngozi Okafor, Charles Novia, Abba Makama, Bruce Ayonote, Ramsey Nouah, Chioma Ude, Shaibu Husseini, Adetokunbo “DJ Tee” Odubawo and CJ Obasi.

We don’t take this for granted,” says Chineze Anyaene per the Premium Times. “We hope the committee fulfils its original mandate, which is to give a platform to credible Nigerian films to compete at the prestigious Academy Awards annually.

Anyaene also revealed that Nigeria couldn’t make any submissions since 2014 when she joined 82 other countries contesting the Best International Film Award because no entry has ever met the minimum criteria to be considered for the award, namely that at least 70% of the dialogue is rendered in a language other than English.
