5 classic Christmas movies to watch this Christmas season

Hi! We’re entering the third (or is it the fourth) week of December and guess what? It is just nine days to Christmas! I bet you are excited just as we are.

Christmas is so near and yet so far. And when we’re not buzzing with preparations for the celebration we might find ourselves at a loose end. So, how might we while away the time at such times? Movies come to the rescue!

But beyond the entertainment that Christmas movies bring are lessons which we might apply in our quotidian lives as we go about conquering the world and solving world problems (or just family squabbles, which is totally fine!).

So we have gathered some of our favourite Christmas-themed-movies of which we can’t get enough. It’s something like a tradition too. No Christmas goes without us seeing these movies. Moreover, the kids love them. Bonus!

So, take a look at some of our old Christmas movie favourites that you might want to watch (again) after a whole year of doing whatever it is we all do to keep the world running.

#1. Home Alone Movies.

You’ve seen it? Well, welcome on board.

The first Home Alone movie was produced in 1990 and is followed by many sequels. There is something about watching this movie again during the festive season with lights off and Christmas lights flashing in the dark. We may not have snow here in Nigeria but the cold and snow in the movie feel so real that we might as be at the North Pole. That’s how great the cinematic effect of this movie is. Watching the first three movies (I can’t vouch for the later parts) with loved ones is total bliss and holiday spirit multiplied several times. Some people, however, feel there’s too much violence expressed in the movie. But when the bad guys want to harm a hapless eight-year-old, we guess they deserve everything coming to them.

#2. Bad Santa

Black Santa is a 2003 American Christmas black comedy crime movie. This movie is sure to get you all emotional and if you must see it, consider doing so at the end of your preparations for the festivities, perhaps on Christmas Eve before bed? The movie teaches important lessons on redemption, something we can reflect on and perhaps apply to our daily life?

A regretfully critically and box-office panned sequel to the movie was released in 2016 as well.

#3. Jingle All the Way

Jingle All the Way is a 1996 American comedy film directed by Brian Levant and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sinbad. You will be forgiven for thinking the Turbo-man is better suited as a title for this movie but still, it was a beauty and a pleasure to watch. A movie about dads and the length the protagonist Schwarzenegger was willing to go to fulfil his son’s dream. This is ranks up there among the must-see (again)  Christmas movies.

#4. The Nightmare Before Christmas

If you love a dark and scary a night before Christmas, this is the movie for you and besides, it has enough musicals to give you the vibe and of course the chills. Produced in 1993, this movie is a gem and a must watch or re-watch this season.

#5. Love Actually

This is the romantic Christmas story you asked for that is guaranteed to make many romantics teary-eyed. The movies shed light on different perspectives of love as it tells ten different love stories linked with each other beautifully. Watch this one with your partner when no one else is around and witness how love happens to different people.
