Nollywood films that won at AMAA 2019 + trailers

At the just-concluded African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) 2019, three Nigerian films emerge winners in five of the 26  possible categories.

It was a poor performance given the hype and high expectations that Nigerians had going into the award. Perhaps the expectations were misplaced or maybe not and it was just a matter of the competition being too strong. Either way, it was a wakeup. The stakes are higher and African filmmakers continue to strive for excellence and to be able to compete with their peers globally. Nevertheless, it was a disappointing outing.

Meanwhile, here is a breakdown of the Nigerian films that brought honours to Nollywood at AMAA 2019. We have also included the trailers and a short description of the films in case you haven’t seen them.

List of the awards won by Nollywood films at the AMAA 2019:

1. King of Boys

King of Boys emerged the Nollywood king at the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA 2019) that took place last night.

The film garnered three awards including the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) award for Best Nigerian Film, Best Actress in a Supporting Role for  Adesua Etomi-Wellington and Best Actress in a Leading Role for Sola Sobowale (Eniola).

While King of Boys won in three categories, two of the categories was in personal categories, Bst Actress in a Supporting role for Adesua Etomi Wellington and Best Actress in a Leading Role for Sola Sobowale. The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) was strictly for Nigerian films, so the film did not compete with any of the films to which it lost to in the other categories in which it was nominated. In a way, one might say, NFVCB award is the category that ensures that at least one Nollywood film will come out a winner during AMAA, as long as the category continues to exist in its present format.

King of Boys follows Alhaja Eniola Salami (Sola Sobowale), a businesswoman and philanthropist whose questionable past is threatening her political ambitions. The film is currently showing on Netflix where the synopsis reads:

When a powerful businesswoman’s political ambitions are threatened by her underworld connections, the ensuing power struggle could cost her everything.

King of Boys was directed by Kemi Adetiba and was produced by Kene Okwuosa, Remi Adetiba and Kemi Adetiba.

Meanwhile, it has been announced that the film will get a sequel which will be produced as a tv series.

2. Choices – Best Short Animation Film

This one is a dark horse, literally. We didn’t even know about this gem – gem it must be to have won the award for Best Short Animation film – prior to its nomination last month. And following the nomination, to our regret, we didn’t dig up to know more about the film, which emerged the winner at the AMAA last night. And so far, to show how obscure this film seems to be, we haven’t been able to find out much about it yet, making it extremely difficult to provide more info. However, we would update this page as soon as we’re able to know more about the film.

3. Delivery Boys – Best Achievement in Visual Effects

The Delivery Boy went into the awards having garnered 13 nominations prior to the awards show. To say that expectations were high for the film is an understatement. So, it was an unexpected shock that the film flopped at the AMAA coming out with only one win – Best Achievement in Visual Effects. One is almost tempted to wonder if the award was consolatory. It won the award against competitions from Sew the Winter to My Skin (South Africa), Knockout Blessing (Nigeria), Mabata Bata (Mozambique), The King of Boys (Nigeria) and Burial of Kojo (Ghana).

Delivery Boy tells the story of  Amir (Jammal Ibrahim), a teenage orphan boy who meets a prostitute ( Jemima Osunde) while trying to flee from a mob. She is a prostitute with an agenda and he has a bomb vest under his dress. They are both running out of time and they soon realise they need each other to achieve their goals.

The film was directed by Adekunle Adejuyigbe and was produced by Something Unusual Studios.
