Oscars 2018: Academy Awards ceremony to hold this Sunday

The 90th Academy Awards otherwise known as Oscars comes this Sunday, 4th March 2018. The pregame starts at 6:30 pm ET. Showtime is at 8 pm ET.

What that means for those living in Nigeria is that the show’s pregame starts Monday, 5th March at 0:30 am and the showtime is 2:00 am. It will be held in Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, where the ceremony has been held since 2002. Television giant ABC has got the right for live telecast of the show. Viewers can also stream the ceremony live on ABC Go.

Nigeria audience can catch it on M-Net Movies Premiere. It will be available on DStv Catch Up via the DStv Explora.

This year’s Oscars is hugely significant and that is because it is the first Academy Awards to be held since the story of Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment allegations broke. The now disgraced, once upon a time powerful filmmaker was accused by dozens of women to have sexually assaulted them. Since then, it has come to light that several high profile men had more or less habitually sexually assaulted several women in Hollywood, a phenomenon that led to #Metoo and Time’s Up movements.

Hosting?

Jimmel Kimmel will be hosting the award, second time in a row. He thinks it’s a bit dicey kind of situation given the sex scandals that has rocked Hollywood in recent times. He isn’t sure yet how he might handle it, telling GQ that different people feel differently on the subject.

He says: “I think there are certain groups of people who think I shouldn’t make any jokes about that situation. And there are groups of people who will be mad if I don’t make jokes about that situation.

So you just kind of have to figure it out. Whatever I do will be criticized by someone.”

The nominations?

Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water has the highest nominations with 13 nods. Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk has eight while Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri has seven.  Click here for the full list of nominations.

Meanwhile, for the biggest prize of the night aka Best Picture, feelers out there are mixed depending on who you asked. However, a Time Magazine survey suggests that 18% of those surveyed thinks Jordan Peele’s social thriller Get Out will this category. 16% picked The Shape of Water while 15% chose Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. TBD who goes home with the golden statue.
