Stephanie Linus’ movie, Dry, wins her a special recognition at the African Film & Arts Festival

Nigeria actress and Filmmaker Stephanie Linus has been specially recognised by the Los Angeles City Council ahead of Pan African Film & Arts Festival (PAFF) Screening for her film, Dry.

Dry tells the story of a thirteen-year-old girl, Halima (played by Zubaida Ibrahim Fagge) who suffers vesicovaginal fistula, a condition that is common among underaged married young women. She was married to Sani (played by Tijjani Faraga), a 60-year-old man, who constantly rapes her.

For her work, Linus was specially recognised by The Blacks in Cinema during a presentation held at the Los Angeles City Council Chambers yesterday as part of the opening of the highly-covered Pan African Film & Arts Festival (PAFF) which will hold in Los Angeles, USA this month.

An excited Linus made the announcement on her Instagram page, writing: “Good Morning Lovelies, I got a Special Recognition for DRY at the Los Angeles City council ahead of Pan African Film & Arts Festival (PAFF) Screening.”

I was recognised at the first-ever Blacks In Cinema presentation. The event took place at the Los Angeles City Council Chambers yesterday.

Los Angeles City Council President Herb J. Wesson kicked off the Black History Month by honouring the actors and filmmakers who paved the way for people all walks of life to be represented in film. With the help of some legendary African-American actors and filmmakers, the day was officially proclaimed #BlacksInCinema in Los Angeles.”

Linus also revealed that Dry, the film which got her the awards, will be screened a second time and also gave some insight about the film.

Dry, in 2019 is still making a great impact around the world. The movie has been selected to screen for the second time at the highly coveted Pan African Film & Arts Festival (PAFF) in Los Angeles, the USA this February.”

In 2016, Dry won Best Narrative Feature at the PAFF. It screens again on Feb 9th, Feb 13th and Feb 18 with an interactive session after the opening night. The movie has made an immensely positive impact across the world in changing the narrative concerning child marriage and other forms of social injustice. It was recalled to the festival this year due to its world-class production quality and continuing importance in global human rights advocacy.

Congratulations to Stephanie Linus.
