Mourinho finally lands a coaching job… With Tottenham FC

Mourinho is now Tottenhan FC Spurs head of coach

At last, the self-described special one, Jose Mourinho, gets a managerial role with  Tottenham FC, also known as Spurs.

Jose Mourinho is now the new head coach and manager after the club sacks Mauricio Pochettino on Tuesday.

Until his appointment, the former Chelsea and Manchester United manager had been out of a job since he was unceremoniously kicked out of Manchester United FC following a disastrous season last year. At the time, Manchester United was languishing at the middle of the table during the 2017/2018 football season.

The sack came mid-season in December 2018 as the Manchester United’s hope of winning any trophy was all but dashed. Since then, Mourinho had been out of a coaching job. Not for a lack of offers, though, as it was reported by the sports press that he had rejected overtures from several clubs. Apparently, Mourinho did not think that any of those offers was right for him. Meanwhile, he was keeping busy with punditry on cable sports networks.

But all that is now history as Tottenham announces Mourinho as their new head of coach. His contract will see him remain at the club until the end of the 2022/23 season – assuming the parties reman happy wth each other.

A statement on the club’s website announcing the appointment quotes Tottenham chairman, Daniel Levy, as calling Mourinho one of the “most successful managers in football.” Levy also expressed his belief that Mourinho will bring his magic touch to Tottenham.

His words: “He has won honours at every club he has coached. We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room.”

We think the hope is not misplaced and Tottenham certainly needs some trophies. The last time the club has won any title was in 2008 when they won the 2008 League Cup. They did come close to winning the Champions League last year, which they lost to fellow English Premer League club Liverpool at the finals held in Madrid, Spain.

In contrast, between 2008 and his sacking as head coach of Manchester United, Mourinho has won four league titles, one Champions League title with Inter Milan, one Europa League with Manchester United, two primary domestic cups and two English League Cups. So Chairman Levy’s beliefs s not misplaced.

As for Mourinho, the special one says he is “excited” at the appointment, according to the Spurs website.

“I am excited to be joining a Club with such a great heritage and such passionate supporters. The quality in both the squad and the academy excites me. Working with these players is what has attracted me.”

One thing is certain though, Mourinho’s appointment is one that is spurring debate with lovers of the sports. And Nigerians, known for their passion for football are in the midst of the online unofficial debate. At the time of writing, Mourinho, Jose and Spurs are trending on numbers one, three and four respectively on the Twitter Nigerian trends. Yes, Nigerians love football. No question about it.

As for us, we wish Mourinho the best in his new appointment. We also want to read your reaction below. Share with us.
