Nigeria may not have won the AFCON 2019 title but they certainly won it on the biggest social media network, Facebook.
An infographic released by the tech company says it all, which shows that Nigeria and Nigerians owned AFCON on the popular social media network.
The Nigeria team was the most talked team on Facebook, followed by Senegal, Algeria (the eventual winners of the tournament), South Africa and Tunisia respectively. And, of course, Nigerians being football nuts that many of them are, they were also the ones that did the most talking. They are followed by South Africans, Ghanaians, Algerians, Senegalese, respectively, with hosts Egyptians taking the number six spot.
Furthermore, the data shows 14th July as the day that got most people talking about AFCON on Facebook. In case you are wondering, 14th July was the date Nigerian played her semifinal match, which the Super Eagles lost 1-2 to eventual winners, Algeria. So, it makes perfect sense that Nigeria totally owned the AFCON discussion on Facebook.
The most talked-about player was Algerian’s Riyad Mahrez. Egyptian’s Salah Mohammed took the number two spot followed by Sadio Mane (number three) and Wilfred Zaha (number four). Nigeria’s Odion Ighalo, who was also the tournament’s highest goal scorer was the fifth most-talked-about player.
