Hierro is a former Real Madrid player and assistant manager. His appointment is described by all football as seamless transition seeing as he had been sporting director for the Spanish FA.
The former defender has some coaching experience, having coached La Liga team Real Oviedo in the 2016-2017 season but left due to a not so impressive mid-table finish.
He had 89 international appearances for Spain in which he netted 29 times.
A statement from the Spanish Football Federation read:“Fernando Hierro will assume the position of national coach in the World Championship of Russia and will appear before the media accompanied by the president of the RFEF (Real Federación Española de Fútbol), Luis Rubiales. Next, he will direct his first training and on Friday he will debut in Sochi at the match of Spain against Portugal.”
