AG Baby is definitely a popular phrase in the music sphere in Africa and beyond, notably used by Nigerian singer and songwriter Adekunle Gold. The talented artist who broke into the industry in 2015 after the release of his hit single “Sade” has released his highly anticipated “Afro Pop Vol. 1” album.
The album, which comes packed with 10 tracks was dropped on the 21st of August 2020 under EMI with licensing from Universal Music Operations Limited. AG had earlier released some tracks as lead singles such as “AG Baby” featuring Nailah Blackman and “Something Different“.
The “Afro Pop Vol. 1” album offers a fresh approach to the crooner’s sound, more embracing of wider influences while still strengthened by the traditional West African sounds that positioned him as a unique force in music.
The album is Adekunle Gold’s ideal entry. He explained it’s not influenced by the pressures to conform but an expression of self.
Adekunle Gold said this about his “Afro Pop Vol. 1″ album: “I wouldn’t exactly call it a rebrand. I don’t think I ever really set out to change anything because of what people were saying. I get why it might look like [it’s about comments], and that would be fair, but nah, it’s not.
“It’s just about who I am naturally. I don’t think I would be here if my career was about people’s comments. I mean, no man is an island… But, the idea for Afro-pop was born while I was making my debut album, Gold – it dropped on July 25, 2016. It was then that I realized that I wanted my next album to sound more pop.”
