Visions’: an anthology of short films by three unconventional Nollywood filmmakers

It’s no secret that for the past couple of years (especially this year), Nigerian short films have been considerably more inventive than their feature length counterparts – both technically and from a storytelling point of view.

This is why we are excited about Visions – an anthology of short films from three of the most promising (and unconventional) Nollywood filmmakers working today, Abba T. Makama (Green White Green), C.J “Fiery” Obasi (Ojuju), and Michael Omonua (Born).

Visions, an anthology of Bruja by Obasi, Brood by Omonua and Shaitan by Makama, will be released under the umbrella of their collective, Surreal16.

It is reported that Surreal16 was formed by the three filmmakers to champion a new kind of Nigerian cinema; one that is unhinged and unconventional, based purely on artistic freedom and expression. Speaking about their collective’s mission, the filmmakers said:

“Surreal16 seeks to impact its generation in the fashion of Dogme 95 which was formed by Danish filmmakers Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg. All through history, cinema through the ages since the German Expressionism has been characterized by various movements across all the continents – except Africa. Africa has never had a cinema wave or movement – nothing impactful anyway. Surreal16’s lofty mission is to change this fact.”

There is as of yet no release date for the collaboration but the producers have issued a teaser.
