What with North Korea, we guess we should all be building bunkers. Terrifying times.
The Russian president made the revelation at an annual address to the Russian parliament, the CNN reports. He says the nuclear-capable cruise missile has “unlimited” range that is capable of eluding air-defence systems and can deliver a warhead at hypersonic speed.
“Russia still has the greatest nuclear potential in the world, but nobody listened to us. Listen now.”
“Since the range is unlimited, it can manoeuvre as much as necessary,” Putin says.
Another military development, Putin said, was a weapon capable of flying “like a meteorite” at several times the speed of sound.
The Kremlin leader says Russian developed the weaponry in response to the withdrawal of the US the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty. Former President George W Bush gave the orders.
In what might be considered as calming of the nerves, Putin maintains that it developed the system purely as a deterrent and defensive option.
“We’ve never had any intention of attacking anybody. Russia will only retaliate if it is attacked,” he assures, maintaining that Russia remains “interested in a normal constructive relationship with the EU and America.”
Let all just hope that he sincerely means that.
