The convict had pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of trespass and theft and begged for leniency. The judge, Hassan Ishaq, however, gave the convict an option to pay N7,000 fine.
He also ordered that the recovered laptop should be released to the owner, while the N16,000 and the cell phone recovered from the convict should be returned to him.
Earlier, prosecutor Vincent Osiji, had told the court that one Deborah Nanfa of Karu, Abuja, reported the matter at the Karu Police Station, on March 13 at about 5.00p.m.
Osiji said the complainant alleged that the convict came to her apartment and stole her laptop.
“During the police investigation, the defendant confessed to having committed the offence and claimed to have sold the stolen laptop at the rate of N20,000.
“The defendant also used part of the N20,000 to purchase a fairly used Nokia phone at the rate of N4,000, but the remaining N16,000 was recovered from him,” Osiji said.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 348 and 287 of the Penal Code.
